Alternate Access mapping - Intranet site
Hi All,
I'm banging my head against a brick wall here trying to setup an alternate access mapping for an intranet site in SharePoint 2007. I have a default site setup which has the following public default URL:
http://SERVERNAME:2586
I want users to access the site using the URL http://Intranet
Now from reading about alternate access mappings I thought this should be as simple as adding an internal url of
http://intranet under the intranet zone. With this set up I preceded to add the binding to the IIS website. I added the binding with All Assigned IP addresses, port 2586, and host as Intranet.
The final thing I did to check this was to add an entry to the hosts file for the server IP address with the host name of intranet. This was followed by a flush of the DNS cache on the server.
Whgen trying to access the site using the URL i now get the IIS7 welcome page, but not the SharePoint site I expected.
Can anyone point me in the direction of what i've done wrong, Its got me stumped.
Cheers,
Grant

Hi,
to make it simple, please follow the following steps to configure AAM (alternate access mapping)
On the Alternate Access Mappings page, click Edit Public URLs.
If the mapping collection that you want to modify is not specified, then choose one.
In the Alternate Access Mapping Collection section,
click Change alternate access mapping collection on the
Alternate Access Mapping Collection menu.
On the Select an Alternate Access Mapping Collection page, click a mapping collection.
In the Public URLs section, you may add new URLs or edit existing URLs in any of the following text boxes:
Default, Intranet, or you can change the Default from
http://abc:555 to
http://abctest Click Save.
Now you’ll have to switch over to your DNS server.
Within the DNS Management Console and Under Forward Lookup Zones:
Add a new Primary Zone with your new domain name.
Add a new Host (A) to the records for http://abctest and point the IP Address to the sharepoint server

Thanks for the repose. Before I do this, I want to confirm that I do not have access to the DNS server just now. I am using the Hosts file. Am I correct in saying that this will work aslong as I access the site from teh server with the host entry?
Thanks.

In IIS the name intranet should use port 80 as the default when you bind it to the site.

Hi,
I would ask the system administrator to do it, otherwise give it a try.Best Regards, Ammar MCT http://ahmed-ammar.blogspot.com Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Regardless of the port used for the initial site?
Thanks for the response, however I get the same welcome page following the edit of the bindings to use port 80.

No joy, although I did add the alternate access mapping again, this time as another default zone. I've added the details to IIS7 with the binding to port 80. I now get a prompt for the user name and password, however I am unable to log in.
