I have a server with 2 pass through disks on the IDE controller (not sure if they should be scsi). Anyway, I want to backup the Hyper-V guest and the pass through drives.

I have a Data Protection Manager 2012sp1 agent on the Hyper-V guest and host. I have treat the guest like a file server and I am backing up the disks, but I wasn't sure if this was a good approach. What will happen when Data Protection Manager tries to backup the Hyper-V guest? Could the affect the file backups from within the guest?

If the VM is being backed up using child partition, then there should not be any problems performing both guest and host level backups for file data.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by child partition. I just browsed to the host and added the Hyper-V guest from the list. Normally I just backup the Hyper-V server as it is using 100% VHDs, but as this has pass through I can't do that.

When you protect a hyper-v guest, DPM will either back it up using child partition (online) or using saved state (offline).

To get a real-time view of how then next backup will be performed, you can run the following test.

To list hyper-V writer captions for guests to see if online or saved state backups can be done:

From an administrative command prompt: (on each node if a cluster)

a. Type: copy con script.txt and press enter
 b. Type: list writers and press enter
 c. Press CTRL + Z (to save)
 d. Type: diskshadow /s script.txt | find /i "caption: backup using"

Output will be displayed for each guest.

As long as backups are being done using child partition (online) - then host and guest level backups should not interfere with each other.
