Can not edit user information in SharePoint
Hi, I have a problem when trying to edit user information. When I click on Edit Item under User Information, it prompts me to Attach File instead of display the list of User Information such as Work email, First, last name...that I can edit. Anyone has this problem before? I install SharePoint Services v3. Thanks.

The detail being desplayed on userprofile page is pushed down from shared service provider. And this detail is in Sync with SSP user profile. MOSS doesn't allow editing user information at the site level. You can edit it from SSP user profile page. This updated information will be synced with user data at site level by site's Profile Sync job, which runs every half an hour

The problem you are having with displaying the file attachment is weird, never heard of that happening before.
But in order to give the users the ability to edit some of the information by selecting the "My Setting" and editing your profile; you need to your Shared Service Provider (SSP) and Click on User Profiles and properties, then click on View Profile Properties. Navigate to the property you want the user to be able to edit, Click Edit and Under Edit Settings, set it to Allow users to edit values in this property.
Please let me know if that helps, or give me more details if not.

Thanks for yourreplies but I am unable to solve this problem. I go to Application Management, Office SharePoimt Server Share Services, then Create or configure this farm's shared services, then I click on the link to my SSP, I can not find User Profiles and My Sites section. It only open a Web Application General Settings.
In addition, the weird thing about this is when I first created a Web Application and a new site, I am always able to edit user information, but after 10 minutes I can not open the editable user's info! Thanks for help.

I am seeing the same display as Vinh.
I have a MOSS farm with a separate Site Collection. In the Site Collection I can not edit the properties of a SharePoint account. The account in use is one of the site colelction administrator accounts (and AppPool service account).
All works normally in a test environment but not on the production server.

I am having the same issue with SP 2010 but it only occured after I did a user import. since we dont keep email address in AD I need to be able to let the users add their own email address. I went into the profile service and allowed users
to edit properties and still nothing. I then deleted the user profile service and associated databases. I still cant edit a profile. Has any one found an answer.. I need to get this fixed because with over 10k users I dont want to have to manually
add everyone's email

still no answer? any one from Microsoft can help? I tried allow users to edit, and even restart the user profile service, still not able edit the user info. probably it is because this is domain account. However, the information is missing comparing
to AD info. suchas first name, last name etc..
However, I noticed that WSS3.0 can edit user info.

Hi Vinh,
In MOSS 2007 the user profiles has to be changed at SSP level. Even If somehow you change it at site level , the profile sync job will again change it back to the same details at the SSP level. If you are not able to find User Profile_layouts/ProfMain.aspx
after your SSP URL to see what happens.
Follow this and do let me know.
Thanks,
Rahul Rashu
