Cant install client on Secondary Server
I upgraded one of our secondary sites to SP2 R2 and started having Management point errors. This has happened on some of the other secondary servers and uninstalling the management point , then uninstalling client and reinstalling both will fix the issue On this particular server I am not having any luck re-installing the client (the uninstalled client was RTM) I have run the uninstall with the command line ccmsetup /uninstall and seems to uninstall successfully. I have rebooted the server and did a client push to the server. The installation seems to go OK up until the point where the SMS Agent host is started. In the client.msi.log file I am seeing this..[21:22:18] PREP driver successfully installedMSI (s) (E4:D0) [21:22:18:580]: Executing op: ProgressTotal(Total=2,Type=1,ByteEquivalent=1300000)MSI (s) (E4:D0) [21:22:18:580]: Executing op: ServiceControl(,Name=CcmExec,Action=1,Wait=1,)MSI (s) (E4:20) [21:22:18:752]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:D4) [21:22:24:252]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:20) [21:22:29:768]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:D4) [21:22:35:284]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:20) [21:22:40:800]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:D4) [21:22:46:315]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:20) [21:22:51:831]: Running as a service.MSI (s) (E4:D0) [21:22:52:253]: Product: Configuration Manager Client -- Error 1920. Hi, On this secondary site server, please run regedit to open registry editor, can you find a reg key called MP in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Nome\Microsoft\SMS. Please renamed the key, then try to reinstall the client and MP on your secondary site server.

This key does not exist on the server.

I had this exact same issue on a site server holding SMP and FSP roles, and it used to hold the MP role once upon a time.
Renaming this key fixed the issue immediately.
Any insight on what the underlying issue is?
Thanks.

I have the same issue on a primary site server (can't install the SMS Agent) but am unable to delete the Micorosft\SMS key for obvious reasons. I've delete the Microsoft\SMS\Client key but still no luck. Anyone have another idea on how to fix this?
Many thanks

How did you try to install the client and what's in ccmsetup.log or client.msi.log?

I executed ccmsetup.exe locally on the site server, have tried right-clicking and 'Run as Admin' as well. Same result. I'm local admin too.

btw, have also tried kicking the install off from the site server via the console. No luck.

sorry Torsten, forgot to post the logs entries.. just the usual:
1. CCMSetup = "MSI: Service 'SMS Agent Host' (CcmExec) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
2. Client.MSI.log =
"MSI (s) (88:90) [13:45:09:098]: Product: Configuration Manager Client -- Error 1920. Service 'SMS Agent Host' (CcmExec) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
and

Well that's outside ConfigMgr then. ccmsetup.exe tries to create a ccmsetup bootstrap service. There must be something on your server that prevents that service from being created or started. Any GPOs? Anything useful in the eventlog?

no gpo's, nothing unusual, all other 64 bit servers install fine, this one won't budge. I've tried everything and I can't resolve this one. the logs show nothing that can help me troubleshoot this. i would rebuild the box if I could but it's the primary
site server so I need to fix this one.

Strangely enough, when I reboot the server the SMS Agent Host service has been installed but the service won't start (the SMS Agent Host service on xxxxx started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services
or porgrams)!!

I stumbled across this
http://www.myitforum.com/forums/tm.aspx?high=&m=214752&mpage=1#214752
I'm fairly sure that this server used to be a MP before as well. So I re-enabled the server as a MP and hey presto, the SMS Agent host service installs and started without any issue. I then removed the MP role and the SMS Agent remains installed and started
:-) It's not the default MP so I guess I'll just leave it instaleld!
I'm one happy camper.
