Column Level Security
I'd like to grant some users access to only some of the fields in the list. I know that there's no column level security in WSS 3.0. Does anybody have any idea how can I do this? Any help is appreciated.

It is not possible to do this out of the box nor have I seen any 3rd party tools to do this (although it sure would be great to have). I seem to recall reading in these forums that someone was able to do something similiar to this by writing their own add-in for the views although I cannot remember the exact details.

Thanks Gary. Are you talking about this post? It is #1 google result for Sharepoint column level security. But it has two serious disadvantages. 1. The guy is not going to share the code, but I myself have no experience in programming and even don't know what to start with. I'm even ready to buy such a solution for a small fee (I need it for my personal use only). 2. This is sutable only to restrict write access, but my main task is to restrict view also.
Thank you for your reply anyway.

I used a work around to achieve column level security. I made the column read only and hidden from New and Edit forms. The same could however be updated through workflows. Described the details in my blog at:http://vinaybhatia.blogspot.com/2009/09/column-level-permissions-in-moss-2007.html

There are a fewfree solutions on codeplex:
The first is SPViewPermissionSetting (Powered by Laurent Cotton Aka Suchii - Bewise) http://spviewpermission.codeplex.com/ that allows you to choose what groups have access to specific views
The second is SPListDisplaySetting (Powered by Laurent Cotton Aka Suchii - Bewise) http://splistdisplaysetting.codeplex.com/ that allows you to select the columns that show up in the for new, display, and edit and to choose the group
There are a few more on the site like OfficeToolbox.SharePoint.Lists v1.0 that only allow you to lock down the column and not choose to allow groups to have different access. http://officetoolbox.codeplex.com/
Note: When using the SPListDisplaySetting and the OfficeToolbox.SharePoint.Lists v1.0 solutions at the same time your results will not be consistent, deactivate one while testing the otherThis does not represent the entire list of solutions to provide trhis solution, only the ones I have used previouslyCheers,-Ivan

Hi Alpesh,Kwizcom has been around for awhile and there stuff is generally good... However, I havent used there products since 2005 they were a little behind when SharePoint 2007 originally came out and a lot of the features they had for SharePoint 2003 were included in the 2007 release... Ive been usng the Bewise stuff for a couple of years and they rock....Ping back the post on what you find... the cool thing about Codeplex is that most of the folks share their source code so you can learn the methiods used to implement the features / solutions and modify them as necessary......Cheers,-IvanIvan Sanders
