Configmgr Client not installing during OSD task Sequence
Been away sick for a few months to come back to an SCCM server not completing task sequences. The team have install sccm 2012 but I am under the impression the 2007 one should still work However it is not continuing after the install configmgr client. No errors visible. Any ideas? <![LOG[Downloaded file from http://ZOMBIE.:80/SMS_DP_SMSPKGC%24/BCR0000B/X64/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe to C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\BCR0000B\X64/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe ]LOG]!><time="11:52:03.744+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="1" thread="872" file="downloadcontent.cpp:1177"> <![LOG[Download done setting progress bar to 100]LOG]!><time="11:52:03.744+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="1" thread="872" file="downloadcontent.cpp:1182"> <![LOG[c:\_smstasksequence\packages\bcr0000b\i386 is a directory. Why are you drawing the conclusion that the client agent isn't installing? The Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task, which is responsible for this, completes successfully according to the above log. In fact, there are no errors in the above log snippet. What is the actual end result of the TS when you run it on a system?Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

There are no ccm folders on the disk and after reboot it doesn't continue into installing software
August 28th, 2012 9:09am

Where are you checking for ccm folders? On 32-bit systems, the client gets installed to c:\windows\system32\ccm and on 64-bit systems it gets installed to c:\windows\syswow64\ccm. Have you verified network connectivity after the reboot? Have you checked ccmsetup.log? Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

the smsts.log There is no CCM folder in any location neither a ccmsetup.log im using F8 directly prior to the reboot(after the install configmgr part)
August 28th, 2012 9:46am

I just tried F8 before the reboot and put the ccmsetup on a memory stick When I run it from the command prompt I get "The subsystem needed to support this image type is not present" There is network connectivity hence it downloads the packages fine

bring up f8 before the reboot, and examine the logs then.. what do they tell you ? Step by Step ConfigMgr 2007 Guides | Step by Step ConfigMgr 2012 Guides | I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

is it supposed to reboot between the applying device drivers and installing configmgr client? it is rebooting after and then sysprepping/going into windows Im guessing the above error is why it isn't installing ccmsetup or whether it's supposed to carry on with the setup after the reboot(which it isn't)

as above that is where I got them from
August 28th, 2012 10:49am

The "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" task does a handful of things including reboting the system so that the deployed image/OS can boot and run Windows Setup and then runs the ConfigMgr client agent installation. This task does occur after drivers are applied. The log above clearly shows this task succeeding. When you press F8, after the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task, what drive is the command-prompt defaulting to? Where exactly are you looking for the ccm and ccmsetup folders and are you looking for them after the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task? Above where you tried to manually run ccmsetup before the reboot, you were doing it in WinPE which is not valid -- anything before the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task is in WinPE. The "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" is occuring directly after the apply device drivers with no reboot. I then F12 and look for the folders c:\windows\ccmsetup c:\windows\syswow64\ccm c:\windows\system32\ccm The drive defaults to x and I think you are right it is in PE still when the reboot occurs the system does not go back into SCCM setup just sysprep and performance test. I was working on the theory someone may have stuffed the capture images but I just recreated a task sequence using the wizard and old wim I had from 2011 and same problem Run out of ideas now
August 28th, 2012 11:40am

F12? Side-note, sysprep is the process of making a system generic by removing unique identifiers and resetting the system back to a default state. It happens when you run sysprep.exe. What you are talking about is actually Windows mini-setup which occurs on a system that you boot that has been syspreped. X: is WinPE. If you are checking anything during WinPE or on the X: drive, it's essentially N/A. You have to wait until after Windows mini-setup is totally complete to check on the status of the ConfigMgr agent because setup doesn't kick off until after mini-setup completes. The best time to do this is after the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task is complete.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

I meant F8 I can go to c:\ but I am pressing F8 when the reboot prompt comes up after the downloading of the configmgr files(see top of log)After that reboot there is NO opportunity to F8 again as windows sysprep and finalisation occurs. There is no further action from SCCM to allow F8 Robbie
August 28th, 2012 3:20pm

Ok, so log into the system after the task sequence exits and check.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

At that stage there are no logs anywhere The _Smststasksequence folder on the c:\ drive has been cleared up and no others anywhere One thing I have noticed is that the smstslog folder on the x:\ drive is in the root of the x:\ im sure it used to be in x:\windows or something. Am I imagining this? Ive been told the others updated the boot images after getting "stuck"

After the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task, you are no longer in WinPE so there is no X drive to examine. The client log files get moved to the ConfigMgr client agent folder: C:\Windows\System32\CCM\logs. Define "stuck"? What's stuck? Where?Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

What's stuck? Where? The team tried to import a driver into the boot image. At this point it failed to rebuild the boot image and they fiddled(their version of stuck). I am trying to get things working again but Ive never seen sccm do this and there are no other logs to help. As they have installed 2012 on another server Ive now thought that maybe I need to be more specific with the ccmsetup I have entered this in the package properties to see if helps but have yet to test ccmsetup.exe /mp:SERVERNAME.FQDN.COM SMSMP=SERVERNAME.FQDN.COM SMSSLP=SERVERNAME.FQDN.COM FSP=SERVERNAME.FQDN.COM The client log files get moved to the ConfigMgr client agent folder: C:\Windows\System32\CCM\logs. They would normally but that folder doesnt exist and the ccmclient did not install. Im not sure it even attempts to after downloading the package

You're jumping around here a lot. You need to describe what you are seeing in terms of what task is specifically being performed and exactly what is being displayed on the screen. If you are at the stage where it is installing the ConfigMgr client agent, then you not in WinPE anymore. As mentioned, after Windows mini-setup completes, which is done during the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task, you are now in the OS that you are deploying. Changing the command-line of the program in the ConfigMgr client agent package has no impact on task sequences. What exactly does your task sequence look like (a screenshot would be most helpful)? Also note that if your task sequence completes any tasks at all, then the boot image is not missing any drivers; if your boot image is missing a necessary network driver, the task sequence would not and could not start.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

Im not jumping around. I think what is happening is the sequence is not working to how you expect it Partition and Format - No Reboot Download of image - No Reboot Extract of image - no reboot Apply Image - no reboot Apply device drivers - no reboot Setup windows and ConfigMgr - no reboot until completion of log entry posted in first post(we are still in PE and this is where I got the logs from ON COMPLETION OF THIS TASK) We are now rebooting MINI SETUP or something to this effect it mentions about updating registry settings - no reboot PERFORMANCE TEST - no reboot CTRL-ALT-DEL prompt - Were done If I remember rightly what should happen is Setup windows and ConfigMgr reboots THEN the setup of configmgr continues after the reboot within windows rather than PE. This is the part that is NOT happening
August 28th, 2012 5:04pm

Also note that if your task sequence completes any tasks at all, then the boot image is not missing any drivers; if your boot image is missing a necessary network driver, the task sequence would not and could not start. Ignore that part it's part of a long story and not relevant to solving the problem. Driver was missing for a particular system but I fixed it on return What exactly does your task sequence look like (a screenshot would be most helpful)? Same as any OS deploy and software install. No difference to anyone elses this ISNT where the issue is as these are unchanged and mostly standard

So that much better describes what you are seeing and what is happening. So now, if you log into the partially deployed system, the one sitting at the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen, and grab the smsts.log, what does it say? The log should be in c:\Windows\temp or c:\_SMSTaskSequence\Logs\Smstslog?Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

Have you reviewed the ccmsetup.log? It should be in c:\Windows\system32\ccmsetup or c:\Windows\ccmsetup? Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

Those folders do not exist. There was no log on the disc I'm wondering whether to use a logging switch in the configmgr command line I am wondering if the 2012 client push maybe interfering. I will disable it tomorrow and try both unless other suggestions I did read the following could be a certificate issue? but found no other details on that ]!><time="17:25:36.055+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="0" thread="2632" file="windes.cpp:185"> < ![LOG[SMS::Crypto::DES::DecryptBuffer( pbKey, nKeySize, pbEncryptedFile, cbFileLow, pbPlain, nPlainSize ), HRESULT=80090005 (e:\nts_sms_fre\sms\framework\smscrypt\windes.cpp,611)]LOG]!><time="17:25:36.055+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="0" thread="2632" file="windes.cpp:611"> < ![LOG[SMS::Crypto::DES::DecryptBufferFromFile( (BYTE*)sFileKey.c_str(), sFileKey.size() * sizeof(WCHAR), pszFilePath, pbDecryptedBuffer, cbDecryptedBuffer ), HRESULT=80090005 (e:\nts_sms_fre\sms\framework\tscore\environmentlib.cpp,138)]LOG]!><time="17:25:36.055+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="0" thread="2632" file="environmentlib.cpp:138"> < ![LOG[LoadFromFile(sEnvPath, shXml), HRESULT=80090005 (e:\nts_sms_fre\sms\framework\tscore\environmentlib.cpp,734)]LOG]!><time="17:25:36.055+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="0" thread="2632" file="environmentlib.cpp:734"> <![LOG[Failed to load environment from C:\_SMSTaskSequence\TSEnv.dat (80090005)]LOG]!><time="17:25:36.055+-60" date="08-28-2012" component="OSDSetupHook" context="" type="2" thread="2632" file="environmentlib.cpp:741">

There is something very wrong with this. Without being there to investigate more, I have no idea what it is but I suspect the image being used is hosed or corrupted because that's where everything is going wonky. There is almost no way that the ConfigMgr 2012 client push is getting in the way. You would have a ccmsetup folder if it was. Have you reviewed the Windows setup logs? Have you verified that the ConfigMgr client package referenced in the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task is valid and up to date? Is this happening on more than one system?Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

Every machine and tried several images including ones that hadnt been fiddled with whilst i was off I rebuilt the configmgr client package HOWEVER it doesnt have all the hotfixes Not looked at the setup logs didnt think there would be anything about configmgr in there

Hotfixes for what? ConfigMgr client agent hotfixes don't automatically install so that's nothing. Rebuilt it from what? The default client directory that the ConfigMgr client agent source files are in has all of the hotfixes in its directory -- although they are not installed automatically as mentioned. Based on what you've listed above, the issue is happening somewhere in Windows setup, thus the need to verify that it is completing successfully. I'm also not convinced that this isn't a simple driver issue either because a lot of what you're relating, just doesn't line up. Sorry, not trying to knock you or your effort here, just saying that without being there in person and seeing some of things in person, I'm having a hard time pinpointing certain things based on your descriptions which seem off. It may be time to call in someone who can look specifically at what's going and is dedicated to helping you.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

no driver issue all drivers installed fine I found that i can also install the configmgr client fine via command line once in windows Ill look through windows setup but not entirely sure what to look for. As i say I have used multiple wims which all produce the same result

Ok captured a new image so definitely not OS BUT I am interested in the possible driver issue. I did remove ALL drivers from the boot packages as someone had included them all into both so they wouldnt rebuild. I only reincluded the network drivers as I thought the other drivers were only pertinent after the apply device driver sequence and subsequent reboot. Are you saying that there may be other types of driver needed in the boot image?
August 30th, 2012 12:53pm

You're past the boot image -- you wouldn't get anywhere in the task sequence without the correct network driver in the boot image - thus the drivers in the boot image have no bearing on this. However, the OS also needs drivers. These are separate from those included in the boot image and are added to the target OS using a drivers task (Auto Apply Drivers based on your screenshot above).Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

Getting there I'm almost certain its a mass storage driver issue. Although windows has the drivers when it finally reaches ctrl-alt-delete i dont think their in place when it tries to read the tsenv.dat file The other entries i highlighted were normal i.e. the requested retry etc. The failure point was reading the tsenv.dat
September 14th, 2012 10:17am

It was a mass storage driver issue. I imported the Win7 chipset drivers into the boot image and it works (either that or i switched the hdd to ahci but i think it was the drivers)
