Hi,
The choice of every reporting tool depends on your needs. Both products are very similar when creating and formatting reports.
Crystal Reports (CR) is a business intelligence application used to design and generate reports from a wide range of data sources. Several other applications, including
Microsoft Visual Studio, at one time bundled an OEM version of CR as a general purpose reporting tool. CR allows users to graphically design data connections and report layout.
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is a server-based report generation software system from Microsoft. SSRS updated quickly, the latest release is 2008 R2. In SSRS
2008 R2, you can access the new Report Part Gallery for "grab and go" reporting by using existing report subcomponents as building blocks to create new reports, display geographical data with new map and geospatial visualization capabilities, achieve more
seamless interoperability with SharePoint for report access, collaboration and management and the use of SharePoint lists as data source for reporting, encapsulate enterprise data source by means of data feeds accessible through published reports. SSRS uses
the Visual Studio-based Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) to build integration, reporting, and analytic solutions in a unified environment. SSRS can create reports from a wide range of data sources, including SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, SAP, Netweaver
BI, PowerPivot workbooks, SharePoint lists, SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse, SQL Azure and others. Overall, for individuals, SSRS is easy to learn and use, for your corporation, the cost is low relatively.

“Despite my past affair with Crystal Reports, I have to report that I’ve thrown over my loyalty to
Stonefield Query. The simplicity and depth of the program make it easy for me to recommend. “ Doug Wolf, Author - Crystal Reports for Dummies

Some useful links that provide high-level overviews of Crystal Reports XI and SSRS on SQL Server 2005. Both were written before SQL 2008 was released:
They don't go into great detail, but I can concur my experience with what the authors are saying from a report developer experience.

I would also agree with Albert's note that every reporting tool depends on your needs.

Ryan
