DPM Service not running/Event ID:999

Hi All, hope everything is well.

DPM2010 has been working pretty well for us the last week or so until this morning.  i came in and tried to open DPM but received this error:

"Unable to connect to (server) (ID: 948)  Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer"

I go to the Services and yup, all but one of the DPM services arent running.  I can get them all to run except DPM and get the error message:

"Windows could not start the DPM service on Local Computer.  Error 1068: Teh Dependency service or group failed to start."

(I also notice that the DPM AccessManager Service stops after a couple minutes on its own as well)

I take a look at the Event Viewer and find this:

*****

The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

An unexpected error caused a failure for process 'DPMAMService'.  Restart the DPM process 'DPMAMService'.

I try to look up EventID:999 but so far, my searches come up empty.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Issue resolved.  The DPM service was dependent on the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services.  i was able to get them to run but only from the LocalSystem account.

follow up question: what's wrong with having it start w/that log in as opposed to the .\MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct account mentioned in the article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff918793.aspx?

any insight would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have got the same problem. SQL server couldn't run because of a login faliure for account \MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct

You should grant the Log on as a service right to this account and it will be OK again. But do not ask why did this right disappeared.

Hi there

I also had this issue, seems to be a problem re-naming the machine after you install DPM 2010

For some reason the DPM service will not start if the machine is re-named after installation..

Might be worth checking it out.

Thanks,

Sam

Hi guys,

Here's some insight.

  1. Renaming the DPM server isn't supported since DPM database (DPMDB) base part of it's configuration on the computername http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399217.aspx
  2. If you change the passoword on the accounts created during the DPM installation you must also change the services associated with that services. SQL and SQL agent.
