Do you need a FIM RTM demo VM?
As part of an ongoing process to determine customer requirements and to prioritize them, we are looking for feedback in conjunction with a FIM Demo VM.What I would like to know is how important a new FIM RTM demo VM is for you. If you want us to release one, please respond to this post. Also, the more responses we get, the higher are the chances to make this happen in the near future. This is your opportunity to have an impact on this… Cheers, Markus Markus Vilcinskas, Knowledge Engineer, Microsoft Corporation

Markus, I think these VM's are essential for people who wish to gain a better understanding of the product and need a low entry point so they can get their hands dirty. I say build it!Brad Turner, ILM MVP - Ensynch, Inc - www.identitychaos.com

I'd absolutely love a VM fully configured with some of the most often used features of the product so I can get deep into the product.
March 22nd, 2010 11:04pm

Yes. I really liked the RC 1 VHD. Additionally, since the VM will be based on eval software it would nice to have a way to download a VM and a script to run and have it configured. Where it auto installs Windows eval, SQL eval, FIM eval.David Lundell www.ilmBestPractices.com

It helps ask questions like "can you preproduce this on the Demo VM?"

Absolutely, yes please. Prepacked demos are very useful for demonstrating features.

In addition, Microsoft has the facitity to host the VMs (there used to be a HOL for MIIS hosted by TechNet). the advantage is that somebody can try it out without fussing with the large freaking download, stitching together the ZIPs, and running Hyper-V somewhere. If given the choice, I'd prefer the hosted VM, but both are important.CraigMartin Edgile, Inc. http://identitytrench.com

Hi Markus; This would definatily be very helpful. For someone like me for example; it is my first time dealing with Identity management product and it would be great seeing it up and running in pre-configured VMs "or an online virtual lab". Thanks; Ahmadgeo

A demo VM would be much appreciated. Even more if supported on multiple virtualization technologies. I also like the idea of a cloud instance (hosted by Microsoft).

Hi Andreas, Will the BRSTE image be the long-term answer to the FIM Demo requirement or should we expect a FIM-only environment in the future? Are their planns to rev the BRSTE image as updates and hotfixes are released for FIM? -Jeremy

First of all THANK YOU all for your feedback and great to hear so much interest for the demo VHD that I have posted in the past. When we moved over to RTM of FIM we also decided that we would release all demos as part of the BRS package. The BRS enviroment will be updated 3-4 times per year and every time we apply all the latest updates and fixes. In addition to releasing FIM as part of this environment we also published a FIM Evaluation Guide under Try-It resources on www.microsoft.com/fim that takes you through setting up FIM for the core scenarios that I had in the all in one Demo VHD before. Direct link to the Eval Guide: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/2/9/22962B83-5795-4006-9BD8-09C943C8D613/FIM2010_EvaluationGuide.docx For example I had to demo FIM managing user access rights to a partner extranet through AD FS and since the BRS environment has all the basics setup it really helped me to get started. I added a new machine tothe Trey Engineering side so I could install FIM on that box to controll access to the Extranet on Woodgrove Bank. I used the eval guide and it only took me a couple of hours. I welcome any feedback that you might have on this approach compared to an all in one environment. Is the BRS environment a good thing or is the all in one VHD a better approach? You can post here or email brsvhdfbk@microsoft.com Brjann ps I have filed bug on that BRS-demo-topology gif link being brokenThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights
