Document Information Panel Inconsistent On Different Machines
I have a custom Excel template associated with a document library. The document library has a custom content type that has a couple of required fields. For some users, they can click "New" on the document library, fill out the required fields in the document information panel and save without issue. For others, they try to save directly to the document library and get error messages like "File could not be checked in because the original version of the file on the server was moved or deleted." or "Cannot perform this operation. The file is no longer checked out or has been deleted". The error messages all come down to the document information panel not being able to save correctly. If I make it so my custom fields aren't required, then the error messages go away, but the properties from the document information panel still aren't saved. What could be going wrong with the machines that can't use the document information panel of the Excel document successfully?

Hi Colin, Its pronbably not the users but their machines. If you have installed multiple versions of office at any time on the machine you may experience systems like these. EXAMPLE Office 2007 Suite with Project 2003 or Visio 2010. It can also be the type of document older versions Office 2003 and earlier using the .DOC mime extension instead of the docx. In additon, please ensure on the client systems the Web Client is enabled. When you use Internet Explorer to access the WebDAV site, Internet Explorer uses Windows HTTP Services (WinHTTP). WinHTTP sends user credentials only in response to requests that occur on a local intranet site during an authenticated logon process. However, WinHTTP does not check the security zone settings in Internet Explorer to determine whether a Web site is a local intranet site. Instead, WinHTTP depends on the proxy settings in Internet Explorer to determine whether a Web site is a local intranet site. -Ivan Ivan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Good ideas, but I checked one of the machines having issues and there weren't mixed versions of Office programs and the WebClient service was started/running. Any other ideas?

Hi Colin, It doesnt matter if there are mixed versions now, if there were mixed versions in the past. Also, when you open a new Document by using the drop down (not one with required coiumns, when you save the document is the it saved back to the sharepoint library? And if yu can provide a little more information as to the office version, OS Version on the client and what version numvber of SharePoint are you using like (12.0.0.6421) if you go to CA and then site settings it will be listed above the top navigation in the center of the screen -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Thanks again. I don't think the machines in question ever had mixed versions of Office. The document will save to the library fine if I don't mark my custom columns as required, but having required columns results in the error messages I mentioned and it blocks the save. SharePoint version is 12.0.0.6656. The problem machines have a mixture of Windows 7 and XP and either Office 2007 or 2010. There seem to be problems with a limited number of users with just about any configuration, but the Windows 7/Office 2010 machines seem to have the least amount of issues.
