Document Library WebPart and Folder Navigation
Hi, I have created a Document Library and am using folders rather than columns for organization. This is largely because when users upload more than one document at a time they are not prompted to tag them with metatdata and then lose thier files amongst the existing documents. It is difficult for them to then find the documents and edit the properties after the fact. With this being said, it is more convenient for them to navigate to the appropriate folder and then upload the multiple documents. The one issue with navigating the folders is with the Document Library Web Part. I can't find a way for them to navigate up a directory. The "Up" button is no longer in the toolbar. The breadcrumbs don't work like they do if you are actually in the Document Library. Am I missing something? Regards, John Deary

I have the same issue. I tried adding a sitemappath but it displays the rootsite > currentsite but not structure of the doc library. I also tried a tree but it display the same as the sitemappath. There has to be a way. All ideas are welcome.

Correct. There's no "up" button in the toolbar of the Doc Library like there is in the Windows Explorer. However, there is the Breadcrumb (new feature in WSS 3.) above the Doc Lib, which IMHO works better than the "up" button since you can click on any node above where you're at even if you're several levels deep into a subsite | doc lib | doc lib subfolder. :-)

What a huge oversite on Microsoft's part. Now I have to tell users to link to their document library (so they can use breadcrumb) rather than drop an instance of their doc library on the main page. If they do it on the main page and click into a folder they are stuck. Thanks for the links on the alternatives.

I still haven't solved this problem. However, while prototyping our new site, I created a document library complete with folders. I made a lot of customizations to the default views, binding specific views to folders of a specific content type. I wasn't keeping careful track of what changes I actually made. When viewing the document library via a webpart if you click on a folder it brought me to the full page document library showing the contents of the folder I clicked. This would be a great compromise. I then tried fiddling with existing document libraries and could not re-create this behaviour I stumbled accross. Anyone have any ideas? Regards, John

Yes, I too would be interested in knowing if there's a web part out there that allows the user to work their way back from the contents of a folder to level listing all folders associated/with premissions to the document library, rather than them having too click on the browsers 'back' button Using WSSv3.0

Breathtaking oversight! I would find it hard to believe that an application built by a 1-man shop would miss something so obvious, but something built by Microsoft? I wonder how many managers reviewed this and signed off?My users click into a folder and then think there is nothing in the document library at all because the folder is empty and there is zero indication with the webpart that the user is not at the root!!!

I was having the same issue as you guys, I nixed the div. On my custom page, my breadcrumb only went so far. So I went into the default.master (that I didn't modify) and replaced/edited the following code...<asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="PlaceHolderTitleBreadcrumb" runat="server"><div class="breadcrumb"><asp:SiteMapPath ID="siteMapPath" Runat="server" SiteMapProvider="CurrentNavSiteMapProviderNoEncode"RenderCurrentNodeAsLink="false" CurrentNodeStyle-CssClass="breadcrumbCurrent" NodeStyle-CssClass="ms-sitemapdirectional"/></div></asp:ContentPlaceHolder>with:<td width="100%" class="breadcrumb"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="PlaceHolderTitleBreadcrumb" runat="server"><asp:SiteMapPath SiteMapProvider="SPContentMapProvider" id="ContentMap" SkipLinkText="" NodeStyle-CssClass="ms-sitemapdirectional" runat="server"/> &nbsp; </asp:ContentPlaceHolder></td>Hope this helps...

Like the original poster I want to be able to show breadcrumbs or some sort of navigation when using a Document Library Web Part I think people in this post are talking about two different things. The document library web part totally sucks if you cant navigate through it. Does anyone have any fixes?

I noticed a few SharePoint 2007 versions of some code to get an up folder button in the document library, but nothing for 2010. Therefore I created the code and uploaded it to my blog: http://www.inspiredbytechnology.com/index.php/2011/06/06/adding-an-up-folder-button-to-a-sharepoint-2010-list-view-webpart/
