Document Library with Versioning drops version comments
We seem to have a problem with versioning in document libraries. I took a look at this post http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/5db238cb-8723-4b52-aeeb-11c32b41b589/ and it appears to be the same. It was never really solved though. Here is how it can be reproduced (SharePoint 2007 on Windows Server 2003): Create a standard document library on a site (with the option "Create a version each time you edit a file in this document library?" set to "Yes"). Create or find a test document to use. Upload this file to the new document library. Write a comment in the Version Comments. Take a look at the "Version History" from the menu - it will show your file as a version 1.0 with the comment showing in the "Comments" column. Fine. Try uploading the file again. Now write another comment text. Again, take a look at the "Version History". Version 2.0 will show up as expected with the comment showing. So far no problems. Now, lets change the document library a bit. In the "Settings" menu select "Create Column". Create a Number column - you decide the name. Press OK. Try uploading the file again. Note that you are now presented with a new screen that asks you for the value for your new number field. Type some value and press OK. Now view the "Version History". Notice that the comments were not saved. Can anyone help or know any solutions? Regards, Jan.

Hi Jan, I have test on my SharePoint 2007 environment which is patched the August 2010 Cumulative Update (12.0.6545.5001) based on your description, the Comments saved as expected after I uploaded an existing file again and input value for new number field. As stated in the kb970946, this issue has been resolved in the June 2009 Cumulative Update. If you’re still at a patch level previous to June 2009 CU, please apply the latest update followed the roadmap in Updates Resource Center and see the result. Thanks & Regards.

Hi Lily, Thanks for your reply. We are already on the Service Pack 2 level, and will try to update to the latest cumulative package available sometime early next week. I will let you know the outcome. Thanks, Jan.
