Failed-modification-via-web-servic es
Hi,
Once again I am working through this online walk-through - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686263(WS.10).aspx
and once again I am getting the dreaded Failed-modification-via-web-services
error message when running the Export Run Profile on the FIM MA.
I have created a new MPR so that the Administrators Set has full access to all Expected Rule Resources (which btw is not in the MS walk through).
I have also modified all MPRs that 'Synchronize..' objects, and ensured that they are all enabled, and have access to 'all attributes'.
I have read and followed the steps from these articles but a reboot of every component did not fix the problem either.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ilm2/thread/deae65d0-ede6-4b36-994b-3695d0cc8260
Can someone please recommend another course of action to deal with this (what appears to be a very common) error in FIM.
Thank you

I have created a new MPR so that the Administrators Set has full access to all Expected Rule Resources (which btw is not in the MS walk through).
It's not in the walkthrough because it's not necessary. I only create&enable this kind of MPR when cleaning up orphaned EREs.
As in most troubleshooting methodologies, it's advised to ensure the scope of the problem is as clear as possible and that there is a way of reproducting it.
So in your case I assume you can create a new User in AD, which is in one of the OU's FIM has in it's AD MA config. As stated in the other topic you have "Create Resource in FIM" checked in the ISR. This should make sure users from AD get "projected" to
the Metaverse if they fail to join an other existing object.
From there on users almost auto-magically get provisioned towards the FIM Portal. Could you copy paste the complete error message? Title and body, or title and stack trace. And preferably for a new user you created. So the error is as "clean" as possible.
Although this might seem a very common error in FIM, one has to ask whether it's the fault of FIM or the people configuring FIM. I myself have been cursing FIM now and then, but in most cases I just made a configuration error.http://setspn.blogspot.com

Very true, Thomas.
To add-on to this, How Do I Guides are no walkthroughs - they are design guides.
As outlined in the first sections, these documents are written for readers that are familiar with the
Getting Started Guides.
In other words, the focus in to discuss specific considerations that are associated with the related scenarios.
Providing detailed step-by-step instructions for initializing the scenario each design guide is based onare is of scope.

Oh, I do apologize then - its just that they appeared to be step-by-step guides to us.
OK - so where would I find actual step-by-step guides on some common FIM scenarios in order to learn the product please?
Coming back to the actual thread - the FIM Portal magically crashed. The failed-modification-via-web-services has changed to a "Service not available" error message across the FIM Portal. Will post this as separate thread on forum. Hopefully
this latest issue can be resolved and we can return to the original thread problem.

Coming back to the actual thread - the FIM Portal magically crashed. The failed-modification-via-web-services has changed to a "Service not available" error message across the FIM Portal. I checked all services are running; IIS app pools are running
- the Portal just died on us.Cannot access the Portal at all just very suddenly.
The URL at the top points to: http://localhost/_layouts /MSILM2/ErrorPage.aspx?ErrorCode=3000.
I executed a Run Profile and the FIM Portal now does not load...any ideas where else to troubleshoot?

The content in the
Getting Started section of the FIM Tech Center.
For sync, that would be:
Introduction to Inbound Synchronization
Introduction to Outbound Synchronization
Ideally, when working with the walkthroughs, you should also take a look at
Understanding Data Synchronization with External Systems from the
Technical Concepts section.

Thank you very much for your patience and prompt responses.
with regards to troubleshooting the original error message of this thread - due to time constraints we have recreated the virtual environment from scratch - and unfortunately after a default install our Portal is not working...this has been posted as a new
thread.
Thank you
