Failed to execute task sequence (0x80004005)
Hi Guys, I had recently upgraded the distribution points with the ConfigMgr SP2 client source files. Since this my OSD TS to Capture Reference Machine fails at the 'Setup Windows and ConfigMgr' Step. In this step it tries to install the client and reboots into Windows, however it is not supposed to boot into Windows. The Steps I have in the TS are: 1) Restart the machine in Win PE 2) Partition the Disk" 3) Apply the OS 4) Apply Windows Settings 5) Apply Network Settings 6) Apply Drivers 7) Setup Windows and ConfigMgr 8) Install Updates 9) Capture Reference Machine. It fails in Step 7. I have attached the log files, which indicates it failed at the Install Client Step. Previously this TS worked without any issues. Since I updated the DPs with the ConfigMgr SP2 Client files it isn't working. Went through the log files but couldn't conclude why this is happening. Hi, What does your commandline look like in the ccmsetup.exe program ? Did you create the package from definition ? So rightclick the packages folder>new>package from definition then point to the source and then start distributing. Jeroen

Hi Jeroen, In the task sequence when I select 'Setup Windows and Configmgr' step it just allows me to specify the Config Mgr Client package and its Installation Properties. It doesn't allow me to specify the program within the Config Mgr Client Package. In the Installation properties I have specified FSP=MyFSPServername. Regards, Simon.

Did you create a new ConfigMgr Client package with SP2 bits or update your Distribution Points for this package with the new client binaries after your upgrade?

I initially updated the source and the distribution points, that didn't work. So I created a new ConfigMgr Client package in SCCM and that didn't work either. Bit puzzled here!!!

I suggest go to check the Properties of WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe in your setup package to see if the Digital Signatures tab exists. If not, please check the files on the server in the Client directory and replace it. When creating a new SCCM client package, just choose Package from definition, and browse to the \\smsserver\c$\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client folder. Also have a look at the share permissions on the Microsoft Configuration Manager folder, also known as SMS_SiteCode share. Sometimes specific permissions are missing there. My ConfigMgr blog: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com Follow me on Twitter: @henkhoogendoorn

Hi Sabrina, That explains it, I just realised the file 'WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe' is 0 KB. How is it possible? It is 0KB in the folder where I extracted the iso file downloaded from Microsoft. There are other files that are 0KB as well WMIRDIST.msi and MSRDCOOB_x86.exe are all 0KB. Regards, Simon.

Hi Henk, Is there any particular reason for creating the package using 'Package from Definition'; are there any benefits of using this option? I normally use New -> Package and define the settings that I want. What is the best way to create the package? Regards, Simon.

Hi Simon, The "Package from Definition" method can only be used for MSI based files. The advantage of it, is that it creates all programs for you. No need to create the programs yourself, and fill in the required installation switches. Just let ConfigMgr do the work for you. Here's a nice blog about the "Package from Definition" method: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com/2011/05/create-package-from-definition-in.html Regards, Henk My ConfigMgr blog: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com Follow me on Twitter: @henkhoogendoorn
