Groups with child groups will not stay together
Report Builder 3.0. SQLServer 2012. There are 5 nested groups in one Tablix. The third one in needs all it's elements to be kept together. The number of lines in this group never exceeds one page. Why would setting the KeepTogether property on the third group to true NOT be enough to ensure that any element within that group remains on the same page? Since this simple obvious technique did not work, all the elements within the third group have been set to keep together including all static element. Still the report looks like there is no request to keep anything together.

Hi Rob, Can you check if any of your groups have page breaks set? This could overwrite the keep together property value. Let me know if it doesnt work. Thanks, Vinaya

None of the 5 groups have page breaks.

It appears that because the third group's child group is kept together, it will remain on the current page along with the top part of the third group unless the number of lines exceeds the page boundary. If it does the whole third group appears on the next page. If the 4th and 5th nested groups are not kept together then a large 3rd group might be split between pages. Is there a way to make the whole third group appear on the next page if the total size of all of it's elements, kept together or not, exceed the current page boundary?

Can you try setting a page break in the third group, to start in a fresh page for each instance of it, and have the keep together property set for the 3rd group and see if it meets your requirement?

Thanks for that suggestion Vinaya, I dont want to put a new group on each page. Some groups only have a few lines and some might cover the whole page. Generally there are 2.5 groups per page. I tried it anyway with the expected result. Each group is on a different page.

After trying to set the page break as was suggested by Vinaya, I left this report hoping for another suggestion. When I went back to it, I removed the page break to get it back to where it should be and now the third level group is being held together correctly. The 4th and 5th child groups are still set to be kept together. I'm not sure what happened there but it turns out that the original setup was correct. I will mark this entry as the answer to provide future viewers with the fastest direction to solve a similar problem. The answer is try setting the page break and then removing it.
