How to prevent web.config overwrite?
On our external web server, our web.config file has been overwritten a couple times. Suspect it's server patches or whatnot, hopefully we're not being hacked. What's the best way to prevent this from happening?

SharePoint actually does update web.config from time to time - you do not want to disable this capability. You are right - it does happen at patching time and may also happen when certain features are deployed and activated.I hope this helps and answers your question-Jeff DeVerter, MCSERackspaceblog:http://www.social-point.comtwitter: http://www.twitter.com/jdeverter

Thanks Jeff. Are there certain patches that do it? I'm aware I might be asking a broad question, but we didn't run anything last night that I know of. Maybe a hotfix, but I'd assume that there would be a multitude of questions like mine here today if everybody applied the same hotfix and saw their sites go down....

Hi scogordo,I agree with Jeff. File web.config may be overwritten when you install updates or service packs for Windows SharePoint Services or when you upgrade an installation to the next product version.By the way, users without “Modify” permission to web.config cannot overwrite the file. Hope it helps. Lily Wu
