Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 Support?
Hi everyone!
I am interested if SCCM Client installation is supported on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.
This OS is not on the list of operating systems supported by Configuration Manager 2007 SP2, in the table called
Computer Client Operating System Requirements on the following TechNet page:
Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 Supported Configurations -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee344146.aspx
However, at the Configuration Manager 2007 General Supported Configurations page -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd547071.aspx the following statement is present:
Configuration Manager 2007 supports client installation and all site server roles in the following virtualization environments:
• Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or Virtual Server 2005 R2 with SP1
• Windows Server 2008
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008
• Windows Server 2008 R2
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2
My dillema is whether Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is supported as OS to install Client on, or if it is supported virtualization platform under which SCCM Client can be installed on guest OS?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Vedran Matica

Yes you can manage hyper-v servers just like physical boxes.

Hi,
If Hyper-v server 2008 R2 isn't in the list of the supported client operating systems, so I suppose it's not supported.
In addition hyper-v server is a supported virtualization platform to implement (virtualize) your ConfigMgr server (s).

There is no operating system titled "Hyper-V Server 2008 R2". I assumed that's why it's not listed. Hyper-v is merely a feature of the OS, not an OS itself.

Yes, that was my understanding also. It is not on the list of supported client operating systems.
In adition, list on the Configuration Manager 2007 General Supported Configurations page -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd547071.aspx which I mentioned in my first post also contains
Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or Virtual Server 2005 R2 with SP1 which is not Operating System, it is just virtualization platform. So, this makes me believe that Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is supported as virtualization platform
to host SCCM Client running inside guest OS.
