Installation problem, SQL query
Really new on this...I'm trying to install SCCM 2007 on a server with windows 2003 sp2 and SQL 2005 sp2.On the SQL Server and Instance screen I got "could not connect or execute sql query".I have installed SQL server 2005 and made a database called SMS_SCM.I can't see any service running or anything. Do I have to create any query or something? Please help, is there any walk threw docs for this? Please any help would be usefull.

You don't need to manually create any database. The installation program will create the database automatically. I have never manually created a database for ConfigMgr/SMS. Maybe this is your problem.

That message is simply an error connecting to the specified SQL Server with theinstaller's credentials. Try remotely connecting to the same server using SQL Server Management Studio.

Hi, I know it is a bit late reply, anyway... The error could be related to the firewall rules on the SQL server. try to disable the firewall, and then see if the error is gone. Regards

I had the very same problem.Previously I had installed Server 2008 on my machine. And then installed Virtual Machine Manager 2007. Which installs SQL 2005 if you don't have it. So that install was basically next, next, next. It configured SQL for me.Then when I went to install System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)2007 it saw that SQL was installed previously and it had the box to fill out:"SQL Server and instance, if applicable."I tried a few variations (guesses)but it would come up with "Could not connect or executeSQL query"I had to figure outthe "instance" name and the correct way to enter it.To find your SQL instance name go to: Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration ManagerIn the management console that comes up you can see the instance name (although it is not labeled as such).Select the "SQL Server 2005 Services" icon along the left. On the right there are 2 "services" One should have the instance name in brackets beside it.Mine read like this "SQL Server (MICROSOFT$VMM$)". I figured out "MICROSOFT$VMM$" was the instance name. For the SCCM install type the following intothe "SQL Server and instance, if applicable." boxservername\instancename in my case it was "server\MICROSOFT$VMM$"When entered correctly it takes right away.Onlooking back, I may have picked a better instance name during the Virtual Machine Manager install. But I'm stuck with that instance name now.Cheers!Virtual Samurai - MCP, CCNA

Virtual Samurai can I get some help please. I am looking at my SQL Server Configuation manager and I don't see any services on the right as you mentioned. I am on a Server 2003 Standard version and I am attempting to install SCCM 2007R2 for testing. I am also being asked for an SQL Server instance. How do I get past this please? l
