Can I install SharePoint Foundation 2013 on SBS 2011 Standard without breaking the site in any way?

Hi Sahalu,

Installing SharePoint server on SBS server family is not a good idea. Reason for that, SBS has Domain Controller which has totally different security policy, which impacts functioning of application. Especially administrator rights on server.

As per the following article only following OS is supported

Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter or the 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate Standard or Datacenter

You may find some information on how to tweak SBS to install SharePoint, but setup will not be MS supported.

Somehow I assumed SharePoint Foundation installation is different from SharePoint Server installation. As you know SharePoint Foundation is integrated with SBS 2011. My thinking is that it would be a simple matter of in-place upgrade? Apparently I am wrong?

The SharePoint Foundation 2013 works with other applications and Windows features, so it depends on any of the components that SharePoint Foundation 2013 needs.  If some features or applications cannot be installed successfully, the SharePoint
Foundation 2013 will not work normally.   The Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 are recommended.

SBS 2011 runs on Windows Server 2008R2 Std.  If you also have 2011 SBS Premium Add-On, you have licensing to run a second server running Windows Server 2008R2 Std + SQL Server 2008.  I would think you can install SharePoint Foundation on the 2nd server and couldn't it be either what came with the original purchase (2010) or the newer version (since you say it runs on Windows SErver 2008R2)?

I knew I could install on a second server, so that isn't the issue. I wanted to see if I could do in-place upgrade of the current SBS Standard installation of SharePoint Foundation 2010 to 2013. Thanks!

No, I never did. To the best of my knowledge it is still not supported. it will break things. You can of course install on a second server as part of the SBS Premium, but then for me, it defeats the purpose, because I want the integration with SBS 2011.

Wish Microsoft has not dropped SBS 2011 Standard, as in my opinion, it is the best Windows Sever solution for tons of small businesses. Anyways I digress... No I haven't.

I apologize for breaking in to the thread, but I must agree with you on your opinion of SBS 2011 Standard.  We currently are good until about 2020 and then must either go to enterprise (overkill for this 10 person company), cloud (don't trust the internet reliability) or some type of unix/Microsoft mixture (my current top choice of all the bad choices.)

I  hate to see it go away as we have been a SBS house since version 4.5 !

SBS 2011 Standard in my experience, is the best small business IT infrastructure out there.  For various reasons, including things like latency, unstable  Internet connectivity or have no interest in the subscription model, Microsoft should have left it as an option for small businesses that are content with what they have.

So yes, one more major refresh of SBS 2011 Standard would have been a really nice and respectful gesture to the tons of small business SBS users. Had Microsoft done that and then announce the major refresh as the last refresh, SBS users would have been way more understanding and willing to move to the cloud without feeling forced, abused or taken for granted by Microsoft.

I want to do the same thing - upgrade from Sharepoint Foundation 2010 to Sharepoint Foundation 2013 on my Windows Small Business Server 2011.
