Internet-based Mail Server
I'm not into sysadmin stuff, but I have a doubt:First of all I'm working on a WSS 3.0 proyect , and I wanted te configure mail alerts, They own a domian name and placed a web page in it with mailbox, and I wanted to know how to configure alertsto use this mailbox, or mail server, is it posible?Does WSS support only SMTP protocol, or only Exhange-based mailbox?Let's Finish This

Hi Freddy,To configure mail alerts, firstly you must configure outgoing mail setting , in which contain 2 parts (install and configure SMTP service, configure outgoing e-mail from central adminsitration) , go through this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263462.aspxsecondly to configure alert me feature do the following , but after configure outgoing e-mail setting
1) If you have Site Owner rights to a site, you can assign an alert to other people with any kind of permission when the alert is created.
a) Go to where your folder is
b) Click the “Alert Me” in the drop down list of the folder
c) Input the users you want to send alerts to in “Send Alerts To” section
d) Do the proper settings in other sections
