Is MOSS 2007 compatible with VMWare?
Is MOSS 2007 compatible with VMWare? Will it, MOSS 2007, run on a VM without any known issues?

Yes, it MOSS 2007 will run on VMWare. However, Microsoft does not officially support SharePoint running virtually on VMWare products, they only support VirtualPC or Virtual Server as the virtualization platforms. If you call support with an issue and mention that you're running on VMware, they'll most likely ask you to recreate the issue on physical hardware or on the supported virtual platform.

Microsoft will still support installs on VMWare. It doesn'tvoid your support at all. However, if they determine the problem is related to VMWare then they'll tell you to contact VMWare to address those issues. I know of many many large installs that are running VMWare. Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like you shouldn't go down the VMWare route from a support perspective. Here's a couple of links to posts from Joel Oleson where he does a much better job than I did describing the situation between SharePoint and VMWare: http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2007/01/05/virtual-server-2005-r2-support-for-wss-3-0-and-moss-2007.aspx http://blogs.msdn.com/joelo/archive/2007/10/16/vhd.aspx One of my current clients runs multiple large SharePoint farms running on VMs hosted by VMWare ESX servers. They've been doing so for the better part of three years and have had very good results. One thing to note is these servers are mainly used in their Proof of Concept and Development environments, but that's mainly because their production environment has to support many thousands of users. Virtualization is definitely a viable option with SharePoint if you're not throwing huge numbers of users or traffic at the servers, and the nice thing is that with Microsoft and VMWare you have a couple of choices to consider for your solution.

Hi,I am in the process of upgrading my entire company's infrastructure. They had an 8 stand alone server configuration. They were running Windows 2000 Server with max 2gigsof memory on each server. I just purchase 5 rack server fom HP. each with a max 8gigs DDR ECC and 5HDD @ 72gigs on RAID 5. I also have a 12TB SAN from Dell MDVault 1000. I already configure the the new ADD with windows 2008 server R2. and I also in stall and confgure Exchange Server 2010. Created all the users and share and share policies. I am stuck on configuring a brand new MOSS 2007. I need some major help Any documentation you might have please that can make this project alittel bit easier please. thank youTAMAR

Just to add to what the others have already said: MOSS runs perfectly well on VMware, it needs sizing just as you'd size a physical farm, but with consideration for vistualisation. Will it run without issues, well yes if you have architected it correctly. Virtualised MOSS can scale to some really quite high numbers and there are some hugh VMWare and HyperV implementations currently being implemented. It is supported under the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program but you will need to verify with VMwre whether you're specific version choice of VMware product is covered under SVVP, as all are not. http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/support/tech_support_guide.pdf Regards John Timney

Just a word of advice - SharePoint 2007 on VMware in a multi-domain environment is a nightmare. Authentication from non-installed domains can fail for no reason, and the only solution is to either restore or clear out the accounts in the content database, re-import, and run a full site crawl (after first deleting all previously crawled content). In this type of environment, VMWare just doesn't work. I would highly recommend a physical piece(s) of hardware for both DB and SP application. Michael Heinrich MS, MVP

Michael Heinrich MS, MVP I've the same issue in my enviroment with VM, the sharepoint application server on the the VM machine also with multidomain, one domain to the server layers and other domain to the users lan. In random situacion the users get the error 401.1 in the browsers and after recycle the IIS application pool is up again online. This is a VMware compatibility problem ? Regards ejgarcia
