Item-Level Permissions Prevent Contributors From Adding Items
I have a SP 2007 Discussion Board on a Team site where those with Contribute access can add new discussion topics and reply to existing topics. However, after I use Settings> Discussion Board Settings > Advanced settings and then set Item-level Permissions for Edit access to None, users who used to be able to add items, now get the standard Error: Access Denied message whenever they try to add a new topic or a reply. This is really strange because users have the New button and are presented with the New Item page, so SP seems to realize they have Contribute access. But once the fill out the form and click OK, they get the error. I have the same problem with Announcement lists, so it's not an issue unique to discussion boards. Maybe I'm wrong, but everything I've read so far indicates that item-level permissions only apply to existing items, and should have no effect on the the ability to add new items. My goal is to allow contributors to add new topics and replies, but once added no one (regular contributors, that is) should be able to change or delete them. This is within a very restricted environment where use of SP Designer is totally prohibited and Visual Studio development can take too long. So, a solution I can implement through the UI is a major plus. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Paul
