MBSA 2.2 and Win7 64 bit Problems

I am having an issue scanning Windows 7 64-bit with mbsa 2.2.  The machines in question are Win7 Enterprise Edition on Xeon processors.  This is in a test network without any outside connections.

It will not find the cab files, even though I have dropped them into the  "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MBSA\Cache" directory.  mbsacli will not find the cab files even when I use the /cabpath and /catalog switches.  I am logged in as the renamed Administrator account, so permissions should not be an issue.

I cannot scan the workstations remotely.  I HAVE read the faq re: Windows 2000 and Service Pack 3, and have enabled Remote Registry.  I cannot install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe, because it fails with an unhelpful 0x8000ffff error.  I haven't been able to discover what that error means.

I do not have a firewall running, and have disabled any antivirus software present on the system.

Thanks.

Thanks for posting in the MBSA forums.

The steps needed to troubleshoot these issues would be best handled by Customer Support Services (CSS). Please feel free to contact them regarding MBSA using this link: http://support.microsoft.com/.  There should be no fee sicne MBSA is a security scan tool and there should be no charge for security releated issues.

In the meantime, you may want to review http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414 regarding the 0x8000ffff error which indicates possible registry corruption or registry issues that need to be corrected.

I hope that helps.

An issue I happen to come accross deals when I rename the "Administrative" account to somethings else, like "Admin", and do other work on the system, before a reboot.  MBSA and MBSACLI just don't work.  One solution has been to rename the account back to the original one; though this may not work 100% of the time.  If you have an extra drive, try this. Install your baseline OS, rename the "Administrative" using "Manager" and reboot it.  Now install your COTS including MBSA and give it a try.
