Hi, is there any way to configure two MOSS 2007 web applications to use the same port and URL? We are considering the possibility of eventually having more than 100 site collections (each with its own content DB) and one web application, and are trying to work around the performance limit of 100 content DB's per web app. We want to keep the same main site URL. We have a medium sized MOSS 2007 farm (2 WFE, 2 App, 1 SQL 2005 server - W2003 Server 32-bit, 4 GB RAM), with a couple dozen content DB's. On a similar note, has anyone had any luck consolidating existing site collections with separate DB's into one content database using mergecontentdbs? In a previous job we had some trouble with this operation, though I wasn't directly involved in what went on. I see a lot of problems in the forums with mergecontentdbs, and also saw the caveats in MS KB 969242. Many thanks for any replies, Chris

Hi Chris, Unfortunately the answer is NO (based on my understanding of your reqeust). You are trying to break or work around the limitation of 100 content DB per Web APP by creating a new web app in MOSS, but wanting to have exactly the same URL and port number. Even if you managed to achieve that, it means your IIS would have two sites with the same hostheader and port. When a request arrives at your IIS server, how does it tell which site should be handling the request? A few things to consider here: - what's the logical definition of a site collection? (department, team, unit?) - is it possible to group similar site collections (site collectoin or business units that share some common characteristics) together under one content DB? - this is a bit extreme, but not impossible. If each of your site collection/content DB grows to 100GB, and there are 100 content DBs in your farm, your web app becomes 10TB in size. Cheers, Allen Wang | http://blogs.msdn.com/allenwang

You can use Same port number for two web apps but you cannot have the same url for two webapps.

Hi AllenWang, how i run the intranet web application with FBA on the publsihing web application URL. For eg: My publishing site run as : http://sharepoint (run at port 80). and second one intranet site run at http://sharepoint:7575 with FBA through LDAP. So i want to run the intranet site on publishing domain(same port), but with appending the URL like : http://sharepoint/Clients/ It means my publishing site would be run at http://sharepoint and my intranet site would be run at http://sharepoint/Clients/ ,with FBA.
