Managed meta data synonyms for search

I am creating a term set.

Some of my terms have multiple names so I am using synonyms.

To give a bad example if my term was "Everything Everywhere" my synonyms would be "Orange" and "Hutchinson Telecom" - the previous names for the company.

When indexing the user types "Orange" and "Everything Everywhere" is recommended - fantastic.

The problem is that this does not work for retrieval.

If I search for Orange - nothing.

If I switch on meta data navigation on the library my synonyms are nowhere to be seem.

My question is am I seeing the expected behaviour and how is this issue worked through since most term sets in my experience will have this type of lifecycle.

Hi Dave,

Did you mean the Managed Metadata term synonyms didn't work for the metadata navigation filter on library? I couldn't reproduce your issue, here is an article about the managed metadata term synonyms and it's configuration you can take a look.

Daniel,

Thanks.  When I say search I my SharePoint search.  I.e. a document has been saved as described above, a full crawl has been run but search will not find via the synonym.

Kind Regards

David

No solution.

I think the answer is basically that synonyms do not work how you want them to work.

They are only useful to help people select the correct term when saving an item rather than assisting during search.

It sounds like you definitely understand the goal.  For example, searches for Money Market Mutual funds and its acronym MMMF should return the same documents.  Have you seen this accomplished any other way?    Would you suggest making the acronym a child of its proper name?

I found this which helped.

It says a workaround is to write a tool to get all synonyms out of the term store and put them into the search Thesaurus file.
