Is it possible to update a distribution point using the site server as the distribution point?

I have 15 distribution point servers that need monthly patching. Today was the first I've tried this, instead of doing it manually. I created a collection with my DP's, downloaded all December patches on my site server, deployed them only to the site server, then distributed them to my collection of DP's. I'm still monitoring the deployment status, a few have downloaded the updates, others show non-complaint. No success at this point. Is this the correct way to automatically update my DP's? Are there any other methods or suggestions - links?

The DPs are perfectly happy getting content from themselves -- there's no need to do anything else assuming that they actually fall into the correct boundary group.

I just treat them the same as other servers i need to have in a patching plan. As Jason said, they will get the content from themselves.
