Hi, I wanted to ask about the future of Report Builder 1.0. As newer versions are released of Report Builder (now with 3.0), I was wondering – does this mean I need to re-create my report models in RB 3.0? I know RB 1.0 is still supported within RB 3.0 – but is this for a limited time? Do I need to consider a discontinuation of RB 1.0 in the future or should I continue developing RB 1.0 models and they will be run against RB 3.0? I would really appreciate an official answer. Hi Ella,Report Builder 3.0 is only available for SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2. This means we can't save a report to SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 or SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 using Report Builder 3.0.Report Builder 1.0 will create a report using SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 namespace. If we save a report to SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 or SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2 using Report Builder 1.0, the report will be updated to SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 or SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2, and the report won't be modified using Report Builder 1.0 again.The model created by Report Builder 1.0 can be used in Report Builder 2.0 or Report Builder 3.0.So far, we have not received an announcement that we will stop the support of Report Builder 1.0.So, we do not need to re-create report models in Report Builder 3.0. Hi EllaI agree with everything Jin said and I'll add my two cents. I have had long discussions with members of the product team on this topic and I know a little bit about the history and direction for these tools. What you should know is that there is no secret agenda or plans for Report Builder 1.0 nor report models. They were developed by a third party group prior to the aquisition and integration with SSRS. The developers of report models and RB 1.0 were since hired by Microsoft and are active members of this forum. Like other technologies Microsoft has aquired, there is typically a period of proving and integration that takes place before a new direction is established.We have not seen significant improvements to the report model architecture since its release in 2005 simply because the product team has been busy with other priorities like the advanced chart, gauge & map components and the new BI report item templates in RB 3.0. Report Builder 1.0 hasn't been entirely replaced by RB 2 or 3 because it still has some capabilities that haven't been entirely replaced by the new tools - such as infinate drill-through.Here's an "official" answer: The strategic direction for future reporting tools will be based on the RDL specification and the Report Builder 1.0 architecture is not. The strategic direction for self-service reporting in SSRS includes enhancing the report model architecture and continuing to develop the new RDL-based Report Builder code base with features that will superceed Report Builder 1.0. There has not been an official announcement about the deprecation of Report Builder 1.0 but that will probably happen evantually.I would continue to invest in report models if it meets your needs now and look to Report Builder 3.0 rather than Report Builder 1.0 when you upgrade.Paul Turley, MVP [Hitachi Consulting] SQLServerBIBlog.com

Hi i've similar but slightly different question. our clients been using report build 1.0 since 2005 quite happily and all sql versions upto 2008 R2 have supported 1.0 and we dont have any issues! But what about sql server 2012 ? RB 1.0 still supported ? we cant YET upgrade to RB 3.0 since some of the clients still using SQL 2005! Thanks for the advise.prk
