The application is targeted at reducing the cost of running conventional Windows operating system. Mr John Okereke, the License Compliance and Anti-Piracy manager of Microsoft Middle East and Africa unwrapped the product at a Cyber Caf survival workshop and mini-exhibition for Lagos Zone. He said the failing business drew the attention of the software giant because Internet cafs and kiosks are a rapidly growing environment for shared access. Besides, he said and the business model of any successful Internet caf depends on high-quality, reliable, computer access to customers while minimizing the overhead cost of acquiring and maintaining shared computers. Microsoft, he said was encouraged to unveil the product because "Cafs and kiosks can be rough environments for shared computers, streams of anonymous users cant usually be trusted to treat the system gently. Thats why youll be glad to have Windows SteadyState - with user restrictions to help prevent problems and Windows Disk Protection to wipe away any problems that do occur". The most remarkable aspect of the new solution is that it comes free to genuine Microsoft Windows XP users. The launch came on the heels of moves by a publicity management outfit, Private Media Mart Limited to ascertain the cause of a sudden reduction in the number of cyber cafs in the country. Highlighting the high rate of pirated software usage in Nigeria as one of the reasons for the failure of cyber caf business, the Microsoft representative stressed the need for cyber caf owners to invest in original software license for genuine products as this will ensure that their computers would always have the needed support offered by the solution providers and reduce downtime and associated risks. The Cyber Caf Survival workshop series will continue in the first quarter of 2008 with the Abuja zone as next port of call.
