Migrate non-primary roles to different hardware
I want to replace a server that is currently running MP, AI sync, Device MP (no devices), SLP, and SUP. There are lots of guides I see for moving the primary site server to new hardware, but I am not finding much for moving a server with these lesser roles to new hardware. Is there an easy way to move those roles to new hardware or is it going to be add role on new server/remove role from old server kind of thing? I'd rather do some kind of p2v (or p2p) thing. Is that even remotely possible?

MP, AI Synch, Device MP, and SLP are trivial. Just add them to the new system and remove from the old. They don't have any data of their own so there's nothing to worry about. Why do you have a device MP if you aren't managing WinMo devices though? Just get rid of it. For the SUP, it doesn't have any data of its own either so its no big deal. The WSUS DB will be a little bit more work but that's really just installing the new WSUS instance and either restoring the DB or pointing it to the remote SQL Server where the DB is at. Then install the SUP on top of it. If the DB isn't remote though, you should consider co-locating it on your SQL Server.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com

THanks, Jason. My SUSDB is co-loctated with the site DB SQL on the primary site server. I had Device MP turned on because it was in the running as we searched for an MDM solution (chose airwatch in the end.) I think I am going to try first to do a P2V migration of the MP server and if it fails, I will build up a new server and migrate the roles. No matter how trivial migrating the roles might be, it must be easier to do a p2v than reinstalling and configuring the OS and then moving the roles over, right? Is there an issue with the site server and the MP getting out of sync? Should I disable the SCCM exec service on the primary or power it off while I am migrating the MP? i guess if the primary is off while the MP is being migrated, I would not need to worry about them getting out of sync. So it might go??? power off the MP. Power off Primary Power on MP. Do p2v migration of MP power off physical MP - leave new virtual MP running. Power on Primary

P2V will should work fine; I wouldn't say its easier though (P2V is fraught with issues). When I say easy, I literally mean just installing the role on the new server and uninstalling the old one. There is nothing else to do. No powering on, powering off, etc. Even for WSUS because that is just a matter of installing a new WSUS instance and using the existing DB -- there is probably a little more to do there like copying some files over so a little research would need to be done on this.Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com
