Missing operating system - USB Media
Hi guys
I exported my OSD task sequence as a standalone media onto a USB flash drive. I received the message saying that USB media was created successfully. No error message.
When I boot a bare metal or old machine from the USB device, I get a message that says "Missing operating system". The same task sequence when exported as an ISO works fine. I am logged in as a user who is part of Administrators group. I have no idea what
I am doing wrong. There are couple of error messages in AdminUi.log but if thats the issue I shouldn't be able to export the task sequence onto the USB. Tried multiple usb's, multiple laptops. Please help, what am i doing wrong ! :-(

Well first of all the computer BIOS has to be able to interpret the USB stick as a "hard drive", and you normally need to select it in the BIOS boot menu.

Thanks Johan. When I do a F12 and check the boot list, I can see the USB and then I select it. After this I get the "Missing operating system". Its not just one USB device, but all of them display similar behavior.
In the past I have exported the task sequence to USB media and it used to work.

Hi,
Did you format the USB drive and made it bootable on Windows 7 before exporting the task sequene to it?

Does it have to be be formatted and made bootable ? In the past I have exported the task sequence the same way and it worked. Is that a requirement ?

I end up always doing it.
Check out this post from J.C Hornbeck on troubleshooting USB boot media.
" The USB Flash drive was not be formatted and set to Active in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. The bootable USB Flash Drive Task Sequence Media does not need to be created on the SCCM 2007 server
and can be created on any PC that is running the SCCM 2007 Admin console.
In order for the USB Flash Drive to work as a bootable Task Sequence Media, the drive has to be formatted FAT32 and made Active (which makes it bootable) in either Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. The only way to do this is by using DISKPART. Right
clicking on the drive under Computer and choosing Format is not enough to make it work."
For SCCM SP2 it should be Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2.

Thanks Jorgen. I will give it a shot but i noticed something in the blog
"If the SCCM 2007 Admin console is being run from and the USB Flash Drive is being created on a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 PC, the SCCM 2007 Admin console and the Task Sequence Media Wizard will automatically setup the USB Flash Drive correctly,
including formatting it and making it Active and bootable. No additional actions need to be taken outside of the SCCM 2007 Admin console."
I am running the console on a Windows 7 machine.

Thanks Jorgen for your helpful suggestion. Formatting the drive, setting it as active and exporting the task sequence did the trick. At this point, I can deal with the way its working.
