Non domain server - add DPM agent

Hello,

I am running SC 2012 SP1, with 5 physical (DPM server is one of them) and 8 virtual servers controlled by it. I use IBM v3700 StorWise, for storing VHDs and DPM backup.

I don't like all my eggs in one basket, so for off-site backup, idea was to use HP X510 Windows Home Server box as dump site for recoveries once a week, then taking out recovered VHDs on USB disks to safe-keeping.

I installed DPM agent manually, even got setdpmserver command on WHS working (-isnondomainserver !!!), and I do see my WHS box in DPM Management, just can't communicate with it....

Also on DPM PowerShell I started command:

Attach-ProductionServer.ps1 DPMserver.domain.local WHSserver user pass domain

I get errors:

There is failure while attaching production server
C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin\Attach-ProductionServ
er.ps1 : The server WHSserver could not be found in Active Directory.

Yeeeeeehaaaaa... but I stated on setdpmserver command -isnondomainserver  and it ran OK, so why it can't be found?

I tried with IP address but no go....

I do have user/pass same on both servers (first setdpmserver creates that user od WHSserver, than I manually create it on DPM server), but it doesn't finish regularly...

also on WHSserver I noticed in Services - DPM CWrapper Service and DPMRA do not start, not even manually

Please, check http://rlevchenko.com/2013/02/04/deploying-dpm-agent-2012-to-untrusted-or-workgroup-computers/

Where did you run script? On DPM server? You should run one on WHSServer with -isnondomainserver parameter. Also verify you don't have any communications problems between dpm server and WHS.

Check if the DPM server is a member of the following groups in AD

Configure group memberships.  There are the three groups we need to check. The DPM Server *must* be a member of the following groups.

  • Distributed COM Users
  • DPMRADCOMTrustedMachines
  • DPMRADmTrustedMachines

You can also check connectivity with WBEMTEST to the server. Use \\servername.domain.xx\root\default with the assigned username for the nondomain server. Al these settings a casesensitive.
