I have a semi-successful OSD TS that fails to deploy the SCCM client. After imaging, there is no smstslog file anywhere on disk (verified with search). The SCCM client package uses ccmclient.exe /noservice SMSSITECODE=AUTO to install. SCCM reports shows that the client installation task fails as follows: The task sequence manager could not successfully complete execution of the task sequence. A failure exit code of 8228 was returned. The operating system reported error 8228: The administrative limit for this request was exceeded.

There is always an smsts.log on the client where a task sequence has run. Did you check c:\Windows\Temp? How did you build your task sequence? Is it a build & capture or a deployment? C:\Windows\Temp does not contain the file, C:\Windows\System32\CCM does not exist, nor does C:\SMSTSLog. I performed a system wide search for the file to no avail. The Task Sequence was built via the wizard; it deploys an image of XP SP3 w/ sysprep; it also attaches to a domain. The ConfigMgr client package was built from definition; the installation parameters were left in their default state.

Are you looking for smsts.log on the deployed client? If so, is there an SMSTSlog folder in C:\Windows\Temp? Ok. Iretrieved the smsts.log file from within WinPE (I still maintain the fact that the file does not appear in the imaged client). The failure may be distrupting the move of the log file. Also, if you're still in PE, the the OS never actually got installed. The above log stops at before mini-setup starts and does not reflect an actual error message or the actual time that the error occured which is sometime after what is represneted in this log file. How did you create and capture your image? Does mini-setup run and finish? Does the target system perform any tasks after mini-setup? If so, what task is the the task sequence on when it fails? (Please answer the above two by watching the client and not from server side log files as these do not accurately reflecting what's going on with the client from mini-setup until the client agent is usccesfully installed and running.) I used the SCCM image capture cd; I built the base image, removed it from the domain, copied Sysprep to the root of C: and ran the image capture boot disk. "Does mini-setup run and finish?" Yes, all of the tasks ennumerated in sysprep.inf finish. "Does the target system perform any tasks after the mini-setup?" The only task to be performed after mini-setup is the installation of the SCCM client. We use an unattended "When you created the client agent setup package, what directory did you use for the source files?" C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client

"tasks ... in sysprep.inf" What does that mean? Do you have a highly customized sysprep.inf that performs additional steps? So after the "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" task, you have no tasks in the deployment task sequence? Also note, joining refernce images to a domain is highly discouraged. "tasks ... in sysprep.inf" Sorry, I simply meant a normal unattended setup: setup administrator password, enter product key, display settings, join the domain, etc. There are no additional tasks after 'Setup Windows and ConfigMgr'.
