OSD TS booting to base image

I have recently done a new customized win7 build, captured using capture media. (This is my first capture)

I am not using MDT

When I run my TS, it boots directly to the base image after applying drivers.

Below is the relevant portion of the TS

applying 2 - 2

I use this identical TS with a wim that was captured by the previous admin for SCCM 2007 and it deploys fine, but has outdated software in it so I am recapturing for our new environment.

If I specify to continue on error for all the steps around that phase of task sequence, I get the same results.

I cant seem to find anything in SMSTS.log to point me in the right direction, but am very new to SCCM and dont really know what to look for as SMSTS.log doesnt seem to have all of the info from the beginning of TS.

When your task sequence is complete, what state is it in?   Are you at a login screen for the OS?

When you say "base image", what do you mean exactly?   After applying the drivers, it should reboot back into Windows PE and finish setting up Windows and the agent client.   Once done, it should send you to a login prompt for windows.

It doesnt join the Domain, it just boots directly into Windows with what was exactly captured.

I install Windows 7, clean it up, then use capture media to grab the wim file. That is what I consider the "base image".

It doesnt seem to be booting back into WinPE after the drivers to continue.

Not sure if this is your issue but when you captured it, did you have the client agent on the computer?

When I'm building my OS before capture, I normally have the sccm client agent on there.   I wonder if it is having issues with this portion since there is no agent (assuming you didn't have that portion)

Here was my build task sequence for my reference machine.   Once it was done, I customized and captured.

Also, are you using the capture media via "create task sequence media"?

Also, how are you running your task sequence?  I assume you're connected to the network and Windows PE has network boot drivers.  I also assume your Apply Network Settings has join domain with an account that has permission to join.

There is no agent on the OS before capture.

It is being captured with capture media created from create media yes.

I would try installing the agent on there and recapturing then.

If you are able to login when the image is complete, check for the smsts.log.  You should have a log that has all the information.  Check this link for the log.  http://sccmguy.com/2011/03/29/where-is-the-smsts-log-located/

You may have 2 smsts.logs.  Be sure to check both.   Post here the contents.

I am running TS from Bootable Media.

This exact TS works fine with another wim file with no CM Client on it.

I am just having another go at it, will report back with smsts.log results shortly.

There is a link to my SMSTS.log file, i combined both of the 2 files together

I also added a line to TS directly after driver installation to reboot back to BootImage which it did.

It proceeded to run Setup Windows and CM, which after it booted back to the same spot ive been having problems with.

So it did do the task "Setup Windows and CM" portion then.  What is it supposed to do afterwards?   Or is the only issue is that it's not joining the domain?
December 20th, 2013 1:15pm

It shows that step in the TS as being run, but is not joining the domain and seems to stop at the red line

I am rerunning the TS with continue on error set on first group, and any related phases. It seems to be halting somewhere, I am just unsure where and cant figure it out from SMSTS.log

I just noticed that it has to be failing on the apply windows settings as it is not setting the time zone on these failed TS

Just use the status messages instead. They will tell you which step failed.

Can you elaborate on this please? Im not familiar with this. There is no error when I am deploying the TS. It just reboots into the applied OS, with no settings or applications.

Can you upload the log?

You didn't specify a Product Key in the Apply Windows Settings task did you?

First, I would take disable the "Continue on Error" settings on these TS items as I find it more difficult to troubleshoot when the thing just keeps going. At least do this for the "Apply Windows Settings" step and try it again and see if truly does fail at this step. Upload a log after that go.

Second, would you send us a screen shot of the Apply Windows Settings step?

Running TS will upload log once completed

disabled ALL Continue on Error

New SMSTS.log

Everything went through without error, with same result.

Curious that it shows that it is loading the CM Agent files on the Setup windows and CM Step and yet I dont see Silverlight or any CM agent on the OS that it boots to.

What is the installation properties on your "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" step?

Installation Properties is Blank
January 3rd, 2014 11:42am

Try setting the properties to the exact same thing you have set in the "Client Installation Settings" area of the admin workspace.

Also, are you applying any Cumulative Updates in the installation properties you are copying over in the above

The only setting I have in there is SMSSITECODE which cant be used in the TS Properties.

No CU's

January 3rd, 2014 11:57am

Try setting the following variable(s):

SMSMP=<SCCM MP FQDN>

Optional Settings (I prefer to use them):

FSP=<SCCM FSP FQDN> SMSCACHESIZE=15360 PATCH="C:\Windows\Temp\hotfix\configmgr2012ac-sp1-kb2882125-x64.msp"

I included the Optional ones as more of a recommendation but it is up to you. FSP gives fallback status messages. Cache Size is increased. HDDs are much bigger these days and large apps like AutoCAD and such take up so much room to cache and install so it's fair to say that a HDD could easily have a 15-30 GB cache and not really take away too much storage.
