OSD using Mike's web service
Hi, I have been successful in getting Mike Niehaus' web service working with MDT2010 to mimic RIS-style naming conventions. I would now like to get this working using SCCM 2007 OSD. Is this possible? http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2009/12/06/ris-style-naming-with-mdt-2010-use-a-web-service.aspx So far I have added a boot image, OS Image and OS install package and updated the relevent Distribution points. I have integrated MDT2010 with SCCM and have created a new MDT task sequence. I have installed the PXE service. When PXE booting my workstation it appears to be unable to service the PXE request and when checking the SMSPXE.log file I notice the following line SMBIOS GUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx > Device not found in the database. Does the computer account have to be prestaged in the SCCM database for this to work unlike MDT Where you can use the web service to pass the chosen computer name to the lite touch install? Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks Loz

If you don't want to prestage the computer you have to specifically enable support for Unknown Computers. This is done by checking unknown computer support on the property page of your PXE service point and advertising a task sequence to the unknown computers collection. This feature is a part of R2, so if you don't have R2 prestaging, or Computer Association as it is called in SCCM, is the only option.

Hi Thanks for the info, You mention creating an advertisement for the task sequence which is a bit new to me having used MDT in the past where the task sequence was available once set up. Do you perhaps have the steps for setting up an MDT task sequence in SCCM from start to finish. I am struggling to find any documentation or blogs on this and may have left out other required steps. Also using the MDT task in SCCM, do you still have access to the config files CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini as I have made custom entries in these within MDT to call Mike's web service. Thanks Loz

There is an informative video on the subject of SCCM/MDT integration that's well worth looking at: http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2008/03/20/sccm-2007-and-microsoft-deployment-toolkit-video-walkthrough.aspx If it doesn't provide answers to your questions please tell me so and I'll get back to you. BTW, Maik also has a web service for MDT with SCCM. Maybe you should check that one out? http://mdtcustomizations.codeplex.com/

Thanks I initially set up the SCCM server following these steps. Unfortunately they are blocked at our work so I won't be able to check these until later. I will need to refresh my memory but after running the integration I don't think there was too much else on setting up an MDT task sequence displayed in the video. I am struggling from this point on. If it is in the video please forgive me I am sure I will find out tonight.
