Outgoing e-mail service stuck as stopping
Hi everyone,
We were having problems with alerts not being sent out at our company and during the fixing process I tried to restart the Outgoing e-mail service through central administration, that is running on our exchange server. It is stuck in "stopping". Does anyone know how to stop it or just start it back up again. The alerts are fixed now and e-mails are being sent out but the service still says stopping. I looked into the timer jobs and there was a job called "Disabling Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail service". It says its a one time job so i figured this is the job thats not running. I tried deleting the job but didn't work. I also have the same problem on our dev box and i tried using the comand stsadm -0 execadmsvcjobs but that didn't work either. Anyone got any ideas?

We are having the same problem.
I didn't see alerts coming in, so I clicked on the "Stop" link, and the Status column in Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mailnow shows "Stopping" and there is no link in the Action column for "Start".
However, alerts are working now, but would like to fixe the status in central admin.
Microsoft are you out there?
Thanks,
-james

We had to remove theoutgoing emailserver from the Farm and then add it back.

Hi
Thanks for the update and suggestion.
Did you get a message come up recommending to uninstall SharePoint due to registry keys already assigned for the server? I'd rather not uninstall if I can help it. I've installed SP1 a few weeks ago but still get the same stopping condition on the SMTP server.
Cheers
Alex

Hi,
same problem here...but in my case the alerts are not working.
If I do a new subscription I get the "You have successfully created an alert for X"email, which means it has nothing to do with the smtp server...the smtp server log is also clean so I conclude it's sharepoint (WSS 3.0 in my case).
After googling around I found a couple of posts but none helped...
any other ideas...?
Thanks!
the posts I found (hope they ca help anyone):

We are also having same problem but our BPA gives a hint for this
"The host (A) resource record for SharePointSMTPServer in the forward lookup zone is missing."
How do I fix this

@SoftInd
You need to ask your Administrator to add this entry on the DNS server.. But adding an entry for this won't fix the problem with the Outgoing E-mails.
Follow the suggestion of Stephan_DFW.. That should help you
