Printer driver was not installed  'Element not found'

I am trying to install printer drivers on two Windows 2012R2 servers and I am getting  the error: Printer driver was not installed  'Element not found'.  In the setupapi.dev.log file it shows '

Class installer: failed(0x00000490)!

Error 1168: Element not found

I have tried using the pnputil to add the driver, but nothing has worked.

Hi,

Both servers have the same issue, right?

Did the server join domain or not?

Have you set the 'Point and Print Restrictions' policy settings for the two servers?

Yes, both servers are posting the same error message.  I should have mentioned they are in the same OU with 2 servers that are NOT posting the error.  I have checked the servers and confirmed the Point and Print Restrictions are not set locally.

All servers are joined to the same domain.

Thank you!

This sounds like the print drivers are not package aware print drivers.

I assume other printer drivers install without any issue, just some drivers that you have not mentioned where they were obtained.

If the print driver does install on one 2012R2 machine, use the print backup utility c:\windows\system32\spool\tools\printbrm.exe to backup the driver and then restore the driver to the machine with the issue adding the driver to the driverstore.

printbrm -b -f backup.printerexport

printbrm -r -s printserver -f backup.printerexport
