Recommendation for SCOM installation language
Hello there,
either I haven't found the correct search terms or nobody has asked this before:
What is the recommended language version SCOM should be installed with in a non-english Windows / Microsoft Server environment?
E.g.: I am sitting in Germany and all my Windows servers and clients (2008 R2, 2003, Win 7, XP, Exchange 2003, SQL 2008) are installed in their german language version. But as I see the SCOM Management Packs are downloadable in an english version sooner
than in an international language and the version of an english pack is often more advanced, promising more features and fewer problems. Regardless of versions I really would like to avoid having the "same" management pack in slightly different versions and
languages in my SCOM.
Kind regards
Carsten

Hi!
I don't think that you will find any recommendations. What are you're requirements?
My personal opinion is that, for a product like OpsMgr and it's intended audience, US-English is the desired choice.
For compatibility and the other reasons you have outlined.

Hi Carsten. I also think the complete US-English is the way to go. Also in order to find support for instance and to find more articles on the errors popping up. Translating will not always be very helpfull in this. I would also try not to mix too much
and use the latest english management packs as well. Also a lot of the community management packs and third party management packs are in english and it would be ashame not to use some of them as they are a real added value.Bob Cornelissen - BICTT (My BICTT Blog)

For the SCOM supported language, please refer to the following article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx
"Support for Languages in Addition to English
Operations Manager supports the following languages: English, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, Italian, and Portuguese (Brazil).
Supported components for different languages
If your systems run a language other than English, you can install Operations Manager 2007 for that language. You also have the option of installing English Operations Manager 2007 for your management group.
For instance, if you use a German version of a Windows operating system on all your servers, you can install German Operations Manager 2007 components for your entire management group. If you have a German version of a Windows operating system on all your
servers, you can optionally install English Operations Manager 2007 components for your entire management group.
Agents for different languages
If you use an English management group, you can monitor any Windows Operating System Locale type.
If you use another language, you can monitor Windows operating systems for English and that language. For instance, if you use a German management group, you can monitor only English and German Windows operating systems.
Console for different languages
Operations Manager consoles are language independent. For example, you can use an Italian Operations Manager console to connect to a German management group."

Roger, all my requirements are: no mixing of management pack languages and most up-to-date MPs.
Even in our german environment the intended audience of the product should very well be able to handle the english SCOM version and even may prefer it.
And I totally agree with you, Bob, that finding support with issues - either of SCOM itself or the monitored systems - it is more likely to find something using english terms. Although the server products have to be German :-(
A good point is the community MPs. This also supports using the english version. So, I will go this way.
Thanx
Carsten
