Removing Windows PE Boot Files
Well, it was inevitable. Somebody fat-fingered a PC name and added it to a collection in SCCM 2007. As a result, an encrypted laptop was instructed to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP SP3 a little too early. I managed to intercept the install before it finished, but now it is stuck in the PE environment. I was able to slave the drive on another PC and can see the file structure after some work. My question: How can I (is it even possible) remove the Windows PE environment and restore the original XP state. New folders that have appeared on the root of the drive in question are: _SMSTaskSequence and boot. There is also a file named bootmgr. There is a sub-folder called backup within the _SMSTaskSequence folder that contains what appears to be the old boot files needed for Windows 7 to boot. Can I simply remove the newly created files and restore the contents of the backup folder to the root of C: and be done with it, or is there something else I need to do?Michael Starks

Issue has been resolved. Once I was able to decrypt the drive, I copied the required files from a known good WIN XP laptop(identical model), booted up UBCD and repaired the MBR. VoilaMichael Starks
