Reporting Services Documenting Software
Hi,I have the unenviable task of documenting our Reporting Services area in my workplace (as I am the one who has been the most involved in developing it). My first task is to document all the functions/views/SPs that each report uses. Since we have about 30+ reports in use, there are a ____ of a lot of functions/views/SPs being used.I started documenting this in an access database once upon a time but in order to keep it up to date butanybody who makes changes to datasets on a report also has to update the access databse, which as you can imagine, never quite happens. What I am looking for is a piece of software that can look up each report, find the datasets on all the reports (in our case mostly refer to UDFs on our SQL Server) and also find the dependencies. The outcome should be a kind of documentation map that will show everything being used by a report, but can also work in ways that can list all reports that a function is a part of. i.e. if I wanted to change a function, I can find out which reports will be affected by this change. If anybody has any idea on what I require, please let me know.Cheers,Matt

You could try BI Documenter, you can try it for free for 15 days. And I don't work for them :)Documents the full BI StackHTHMatt

That is exactly what I am after by the looks of it - The only problem is that I need something for SQL 2005. I installed the above and it would not allow me to connect to my database. Thanks for the reply though

OK, I got it to work in the end and it documented all objects on my SQL SERVER and all objects on my Report Server but it doesn't combine the 2. I wanted to find out what report(s) a function will affect if changed. Nearly there though, it was a good find

Hi,I am not aware of anything that will check your database with an RS report. On the other hand you could use TFS/VSTS DBPro and that will check that changes made to a function procedure don't effect other procedures.Maybe someone else will come up with another idea.CheersMatt

I will give you the answer for at least finding this software. Since the results from BI Documentor output to a SQL database, I am able to create a SP that links all the views/tables/functions/SPs used by all the reports and then populate my own tables with dependencies from the initial objects. I was thinking of creating a .net app with an XML parser as it can read the reprt (rdl) files as XML where I can extract the queries used in the datasets but at least this software saves me the trouble of doing it. I had the same problem. I just used Visio 2000. It checked my database and created a graphic layout of the objects in it. Try it.

Turns out I might not need software after all. I created my own VB.Net windows app which browses to the directory where all the RDL files are stored and then coded an XML parser to browse through the datasets of each report and see which of my server objects are being used directly by the reports.I have pushed all this data to a table on my SQL server. Since I am making good time, I may as well code my own dependency finder and then I don't need any extra software at all.In Vegas, you get a million mexicans standing in a line flipping "lady" cards at you. Reporting should should be simple, so why does is seem so overwhelming-- especially at an enterprise level? It's crazy, with so many software companies, and numerous approaches, everyone is claiming to be easy to use, but none of them ever are. Where to even begin? Navigating the reporting software possibilities is a task unto itself. Well, take a deep breath, help is on the way. There is a free guide to get you started: “Everything You Need to Know About Reporting (but were afraid to ask)” is a great first step. This is the guide that everyone wishes they had as a reference to know what even matters in a report solution. It will help you rest assured that your company is getting the most out of your reporting software--and covering the bases that count. This is a great (and free) resource to identify the solution that is right for you. Go to [Business Reporting Software] and download Everything You Need to Know About Reporting. I've also crated a web app which zip and unzip an whole folder with reports from SSRS. (it could be a root folder too). Alexei Cioina
