SCCM / SCSM and Physical Assets
We have a customer that needs a single solution for asset management and a ticketing system. Obviously SCSM will handle the helpdesk piece and SCCM is capable of handling the software and hardware inventory and software licenses with AI, so my question is: Is there any feature of any one of these (or any other System Center product) that will track physical non-computer assets (i.e. furniture, printers, etc.)? Thanks.xtiyu32n

I would reccomend that they setup a way to pull data from SCCM into whatever database they use to manage physical assets so that everythng is combined into one place. That should be very easy to accomplish. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

That's just it - they have had a CA product for a long time and hate it. They want to move to System Center. Will no features of SCSM accomplish this (even with a 3rd party plug-in)? xtiyu32n

Service Manager can be extended via Management Packs, so yes it is possible, so marking Kent's reply above as the answer is wrong in my opinion John. As xtiyu32n asked in his first post, yes you can track other CI items within SCSM. Look here as a starter: http://contoso.se/blog/?p=1272 I know that's not for furniture, but it's an example that SCSM can be extended. Using the new authoring console RC release it's very quick and easy to add additional classes for items such as Tables, Chairs, Rooms etc. The documentation for the Authoring Console includes an example on how to create a management pack for projectors. Following this would give you the basics to create what you need. Also, quickly, Printers are handled automatically by SCSM, as long as they're shared on a print server and published in AD. Had the question been asking in a SCSM forum I would agree but in this forum we deal specifically with SCCM and from the SCCM perspective Kent's answer is correct. I did however point out that SCCM data may be able to be pulled into an external database and combined with other data to provide a one stop shop for what the poster needs. Since the question crosses over System Center products, the answer obviously will. There is not a SCCM/SCSM forum, so I had to pick one to post in. Perhaps I will post it in the SCSM forum now. xtiyu32n

Mohammad, SCCM is not designed to do this. You need an asset tracking system. SCCM is not that.John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum/|
