SCCM PXE Boot Image Question

How do you determine which boot image the PXE server uses?

I have more than one boot image, and right now I want to change the image the pxe server uses.

I understand once the task sequence is selected it will use the image in the TS, however.. I want to add new nic drivers withough changing the existing boot image.

Thanks.

Sorry, I know how to add drivers to boot images... what I want to know is... How does the pxe server decide which boot image to give after hitting f12 for pxe booting if there is more than one.

Example:  I have an image that has been used for some time...  I created a new image with new drivers and added it to the DP...  what makes the pxe server switch if more than one image exists?

the boot image in use is the one that is attached to the task sequence you select

It will choose the most recent one, but, if the TS specifies a different boot image, it will ask you to reboot and then the correct boot image will load.

From my experience, it is not the most recent boot image update, but the most recent task sequence deployment which determines the boot image chosen for PXE. If there are multiple task sequences deployed for a device, the boot image of the most recent task sequence deployment is used for PXE. To control which boot image is used for PXE is therefore quiet simple: Simply isolate the computer to be used for PXE by putting it into a collection where only those task sequences are deployed to, which contain appropriate bo

Yesterday I dealt with the same issue. WinPE boot but the new Dell laptop didn't get any network connection due to missing driver.

I updated WinPE boot image with latest Dell PE drivers and replicated the two new boot images to my branch office. I boot the client with the problem and saw that it was using the old boot image.

What I did:

- On remote DP opened CMtrace.exe

- Opened this fil C:\SMS_DP$\sms\logs\SMSPXE.log

- Boot my client and saw MAC address and "found optional advertisement" ID

- Searched for the deployment with this ID and modified the boot image in the OSD task sequence.

- Rebooted and boot with PXE again. New boot image was selected

Worked as a charm.
