SCOM 2007 cannot monitor Server 2012
I have heard a rumor that Server 2012 cannot be monitored with SCOM 2007 R2 - can anyone here confirm that? I can't find any announcement of this on any of Microsoft's sites... if an upgrade to SCOM 2012 is required before being able to monitor Server
2012 I think many corporations are going to be in panic mode...

Hi
Server 2012 hasn't been released yet so there isn't a management pack. A management pack should be available when (or soon after) it is released and management packs aren't version specific so they should work on SCOM 2007 R2 as well as SCOM 2012
(there may be added extras for dashboards that are only available in SCOM 2012 wrapped up as .mpb files but core libraries and monitoring should be available to SCOM 2007).
The only people who can give you a definitive answer will be under NDA so you won't get any confirmation here. But I don't know any corporations in panic mode because they all expect, like I do, that a Server 2012 MP will work on SCOM 2007 R2.

Graham

Same here on all statements by Graham.
And nothing is for sure until the mp is released, so please try to not go for rumors, but wait until it is released. When it is, just pick it up and pick up the management pack guide. In the mp guide you will see whats up with the mp and what belongs to which
version. As Graham said, the dashboards with .mpb extension can not be loaded in 2007, but the main magic/monitoring is done by the .mp files. And the persons who know will not tell you until release day as Graham says, they are all under NDA. Hi
Hopefully the above reassures you - I'll bookmark this thread and post again when a Windows Server 2012 management pack is released to confirm that it will work on SCOM 2007 R2. If you have any further concerns about the windows server 2012 mp then please
feel free to reopen the thread.
Cheers

OK - time to apologise, eat humble pie and admit I didn't see this one coming. I can foresee many very unhappy customers. Here is the latest news:

The 2012 SCOM agent can report to a 2007 R2 environment, so this is purely a management pack issue. It's very frustrating since it looks to only be a tool to force people to SCOM 2012, not done for any technical reasons. We were already planning out a
migration to SCOM 2012, but now we have people wanting to migrate to Server 2012 and we have no way to monitor them.
