We set up a few redirect links on our Intranet site to other sites.  one works and the other doesn't. 

to chapters site -- when clicking on the link, it goes to a interim page on Intranet for a few seconds.  it shows: This page is redirecting to http://chapterssp:80/SitePages/Home.aspx in 5 seconds.  and it went fine to http://chapterssp/SitePages/Home.aspx (the actual URL is https://chapterssp.xxxxx.org/....., which was set in redirect setting)  so this one is working.

however when redirecting to board site -- this shows: This page is redirecting to http://board:80/SitePages/Home.aspx in 5 seconds.  then it goes to http://board/SitePages/Home.aspx and it says "this page cannot be displayed".  the actual URL should be " https://chapterssp.xxxxx.org/....." and it was set in the redirect setting.  if go to the URL directly, the page loads fine.

in Alternate Access Mappings in SP, settings for chapters and board are the same.  and in IIS on server, it looks like they have the same settings for Bindings as well.

I am not familiar with either SP server settings nor IIS settings.  can anybody let me know what this issue might be, on SP side or on IIS side?  what else can I check?

isn't quite the same. for chapter, you are redirecting internally, for the other one, you are redirecting outside in internet, and back to your farm

Check if DNS is configured ok and it's resolving https://chapterssp.xxxxx.org
