SSRS or Crystal Reports
Hello all ... I want to know which would be the best for reporting in either of the above two. I am working on with SSRS but don't have any idea about crystal reports. So you all please suggest the best one would be for me espcially for web based reporting. Regards,

I would base my choice based on the requirements I have and expertise level of the team that is working. That apart, SSRS is quite easy to learn and start (except for setting up the report server). Crystal reports has now it's own web specific tool, which they call Crystal Server Pages (CSP) and they also gell well with .Net IDE and languages. For certain advance level reporting requirements, I find CR to be moresupportive. There arecertain trivial things like, page footers to appear at end, breaking pagesas grouping value changes etc. that require a work-around in SSRS. But one big advantage I see in SSRSis that you can use .Net code for certain functionalities. In fact, you can attach and refer an assembly from an RDL file. I would suggest, if your requirements are not very complex then go ahead with SSRS. But it would be imperative to explore further and wait for others to pitch in with their views. eDIT: Some useful comparison tips can be found at these places: http://www.kenhamady.com/ssrscomp.pdf http://www.crystalreportsbook.com/SSRSandCR_Conclusion.asp

Thanks RJV for such a fruitful and earliest response. Well my requirement is some how simple in the beginning but might be complex at the end. I am comparing different parametric charts at this moment. Regards,

The number of charts available in CR is more than what's currently available in SSRS 2005. But there are 3rd party charting tools (like Dundas & ChartFX) that can integrate easily with SSRS. This page will give you a slight overview of the chart types available in CR. For SSRS, drag a chart object and rt click properties and you can see all the default chart types available.

“Despite my past affair with Crystal Reports, I have to report that I’ve thrown over my loyalty to Stonefield Query. The simplicity and depth of the program make it easy for me to recommend. “ Doug Wolf, Author - Crystal Reports for Dummies
