Hi,

I'm trying to update managed metadata field in my designer workflow. I've used the below format to set the field

WSSID;#VAL|GUID  where WSSID is the ID of the list item in my hidden taxonomy list.

VAL is the actual term value or label

GUID is the guid obtained for  "IdForTerm" column in my hidden taxonomy list.

Inspite of using the correct format..the managed metadata field value is not getting set at all..

Any clues as to why is it failing?

Following blog post mentions that using SPD you can only set Managed Metadata field if its empty. If it already has value then SPD does not seem to update the field. Can you please verify in your workflow if this is true?

"More importantly though, it does not work in all cases. It seems to work fine when no value was set for the column yet, but as soon as it is, you are not able to modify it from the workflow."

If above is true then you can probably think of using the custom activity for updating Managed Meatadata field. Same article has the code for that.
