Hi, I have an unique situation here. I successfully upgraded SharePoint 2.0 to 3.0. The upgrade went fine. However the Home page still has the look and feel of SharePoint 2.0. All the team sites have version 3.0 interface. I found out that because the WSS 2.0 was part of Project Server 2003 and only if Project server also be upgraded to Project server 2007 for the Home page to change to WSS 3.0 look and feel. The problem is the company will not upgrade and already stopped using Project server 2003. They just want to keep SharePoint. I’m trying to solve this by backed up and restored the upgraded production content database to a test environment. I installed WSS 3.0 (No upgrade), created a web application and point to the restored content database. This works for all team sites (http://testweb/teamsite) as far as I can tell, but I get an error “Invalid template” when I try to open the Home page ( http://testweb/Default.aspx). I use the Sharepoint Designer 2007 and open the Default.aspx and found error “Error rendering web part”. It appears that these web parts are still WSS 2.0 and didn’t get upgraded for whatever reasons, and they can’t be rendered in native WSS 3.0. I’m not sure how to go from here. I’m thinking of delete these webparts in the Default.aspx and recreate them. But I’m not a developer. I hope that after these web parts have deleted, I will be able to open the Home Page? and redo the Home page from SharePoint not from Designer 2007. Please help. Thank You. Emmanuel

Was any customisations made to the homepage using FrontPage? This would of saved the whole content to the database. You could try to reset the homepage back to the definition (site settings > reset to site definition).My SharePoint Blog - http://www.davehunter.co.uk/blog

I experienced a similar issue with my upgrade and it turned out to be the Image Place Holder and Web Editor Content Parts. What I ended up doing was replacing the ones in my migrated sites with ones taken from SharePoint 2007 native sites. You could also append ?contents=1 onto the url of your page, after the default.aspx, remove any Image/WECP instances and trying to access it again. I tried Dave Hunt's suggestion. It doesn't work, error "The file at the specified URL doesn't exist in this site". (Since I can't see the Homepage, to do this by I access the "Reset Site to Page Defimition Version" page using http://testweb/_layouts/reghost.aspx) I tried Steven Andrews' suggestion. It also doesn't work. When I tried to delete the error webparts on "Webpart Page Maintenance" page. I got error "The operation could not be completed, the webpart is not on this page". I think these webparts are on the original upgraded Web server and the fresh installed WSS 3.0 web server doesn't have them. I need to find them and copy them over and see what I can do with them. Have you tried to go into "Site Settings", "Title, Description and Icon" and select the "Update user interface" option in the "Visual Upgrade" section? This worked on my home page that was upgraded from 2003 to 2007 to 2010.Kim Frehe

I found the "missing" folder which appears to be existed only when SharePoint was part of Project Server 2003. When WSS was upgraded this folder was left alone and therefore the Homepage is still has the WSS 2.0 look and feel. In the "web server extensions" folder of the fresh installed WSS 3.0 there are three folders: "12", "50" and "wpresources". The upgraded web server has an extra folder "60". I copied the "60" folder to the test web server, the HomePage comes up fine. Now, I have successfully taken the upgraded production WSS 3.0 content database and restored it on a test environment fully functional. But the main goal hasn’t been achieved, the Homepage still has WSS 2.0 interface, I need change the Homepage to WSS 3.0 look and feel. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced. I tried Kim's suggestion. It doesn't apply. WSS 3.0 dosen't have "Visual Upgrade' section. No "Update user interface" potion to select. I've also tried to delete Default.aspx using Designer 2007 and replace it a known working Default.aspx but failed to replace.
