Single RMS and multiple gateways
Hi, I was wondering if I am correct by saying: When using 1 single RMS there is only one Management Group for example SCOMTESTENV. Then this SCOMTESTENV should be used for every single Gateway server I would use right? But then the question, if I monitor multiple customer with different domains how do I correctly keep them splitted apart from each other. Because I would see 100+ server from different customers in for example Windows Computer view. How is this usually solved? Thanks, Tony

Hi There can only be one RMS per Management Group. And you shouldn't really have gateways communicate directly with it. If you want to use a Gateway per customer then you'll really need secondary management servers in your home forest to take the load off the RMS and also to facilitate high availability for gateway failover between management servers. When you implement gateways, you should remember to use the sitename switch: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540382.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb381423.aspx There is a good thread here which discusses options: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/303b671e-3a26-486c-988e-2f8d7bd53c88 Configuration of certificates on gateways and management servers is discussed here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735408.aspx Cheers Graham View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi Graham, Thanks for the reply, management server will indeed be necessary I am aware about the certificates etc. I have a test environment running where I configured a gateway. But I did this without the /sitename switch, in the documents I can't find where this is used for? Is it to seperate different domains/departments? Thanks, Tony

Hi Tony The sitename switch can be used to easier to differentiate alerts \ computers \ objects between customers (each customer = site as such): http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2009/03/05/using-sitename-when-deploying-gateways-to-help-manage-alerts.aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/michaelpearson/archive/2010/06/11/gateway-approval-tool-what-is-the-sitename-property-for.aspx Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/
