Site vs Sharepoint Site
When I create a site and go to "Manage Content and Struture" and hover over the icon the message says "Sharepoint Site". I notice that others say just "Site" . The icons are different in both cases. What is the difference between the two? I dont remember doing anything different in either case.

This has nothing to do with progamming so doesn't belong in the Development and Programming forum. Moving to the General Question and Answers forum ...

Do you mean the difference between a site and a site collection? Please clarify.

They are both sites in a site collection. I am fairly sure I created them both as Collaboration/Team Site The Icon for the SharePoint Site is a group of different coloredpeople in a circle The Icon for the Site is aTree Diagram (you can a big example if you go to SIte Actions and look at the Icon next to Manage Content and Structure. That Icon has a magnifying glass whereas the one representing the site does not. I just noticed that if you expand them, the one that says "Site" when you hover over it has more items: Announcements Calendar Documents Images Links Pages SharedDocuments Tasks Team Discussion WorkFlow Tasks whereas the one when you hover over it says "SharePoint Site" has: Announcements Calendar Links SharedDocuments Tasks Team Discussion

Can you explain what the issue is?

Why is one site a "SharePoint Site" and another site just a "Site"?

I think that "Site" has the Publishing feature enabled, "Sharepoint Site" doesn't.

Mattaniah, I see what you are talking about. The very top one that you are hovering over that says "Site" (very top entry in "Site and Content Structure"). That one says "Site" as apposed to what you see when you hover your mouse over one of the icons below it (icon of 4 people/ 4 colors), those say "SharePoint Site". Whats the difference? The top one that is just called "Site" is the name of your "Site Collection". The ones below it that are called "SharePoint Sites" when you hover over them are sites that you have created within your Site Collection. Bob

That's all well and good, but one of the sites in the site collection is also, when you hover over it, a "site" as opposed to a "site colection (4 people/colors). I thought you could have only one site collection per web site. Is that correct?

Its a mini flow chart with a big box on the top, and 3 smaller boxes below it. The rightmost smaller box is kind of red. All icons below there are the "site" icons with 4 people. below there are some folders.

Hi All, I would like to find out what would be in you all's opinion the best way to setup a virtual team (in terms of software use, cost, etc) Approximately, I will be having 10-20 members in the virtual team. I have never used Sharepoint before, how do you think it may benefit virtual teams. I am just browsing for softwares that are available in the market today but since I ususally don't keep up with the latest technologies I am the last one to know. I decided before I make a decision may be gather some opinion from other people. Thanks, Ameer

The "Site" that has the Pages library is a publishing site. The other "SharePoint Site" is a team site. I am still a little lost, other than the inconsistent naming and misspelling of SharePoint (it is spelled "Sharepoint"). Are you having an issue or is this just curiosity about the UI? M

I have no idea what the problem with answering this question was and why it was that the responders required you to repeat your question multiple times. It's not like you were asking a complex question. To me, your question was clear just by reading the thread subject. On top of that, the answer you got only took you half of the way... To clarify, below is some more details on the difference between a Publishing Site ("Site") and a Team Site ("Sharepoint Site") which i believe is what you really wanted to know (and rightly so, it's a very good question) (Taken from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-server-help/default-site-templates-HA010174491.aspx) Publishing Site Select this site template if you want to create a blank Web site and quickly publish Web pages. This template includes document and image libraries for storing Web publishing assets. Contributors can work on draft versions of pages and publish them to make them visible to readers. The site includes document and image libraries for storing Web publishing assets. Team Site Select this site template when you want to create a site that teams can use to create, organize, and share information. The template includes a document library, an announcements list, a calendar, a contacts list, and a links list. Robbie
