Subsite architecture question
Hi,
My company is starting a new web application and migrate old SharePoint 2007, POC SharePoint 2010 farm to a new SharePoint 2010 farm. This is a good time to evaluate the site architecture since we have performance issue. At 2007 we have one web
application, root site collection and then 100+ subsite under it. At root site homepage we have a content query web part to get data from all subsites and use as "dashboard" function for managers. This works OK at the beginning but now the
peformance is really slow and users are suffering. Since we are migrating to new farm I am re-evaluating the design and wondering how we can improve the performance yet still get results (subsite list data) to the root site homepage and display the collective
data. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have two issues going on here. I'm no admin/architect but i think people mostly break up the sub sites into site collections based on size of the data b/c you don't want the databases getting too big. 1 from a performance perspective and
2 in managing backups. As far as your CQWP goes, how many you have and how much data it going to add time to load the page. Have you looked at any page loading statistics? I typically use firefox and yslow plugin this will let you know where you stand. So
in order to streamline that you might want to consider making custom web parts to pull back your information. Possibly look into some ajax and loading the page but have the web part display once its loaded the info.-tom daly

Thanks Tom for the pointers. I have checked the performance. The database is not that big (10 GB) but the page contains couple customized CQWP querying 100+subsites of data from certain lists. Firefox default rules seeing it's in grade
B (2007 farm). I also check on the object cache settings but not sure whether it will help or not. Execpt general description of how to set it up I didn't find any real-world cases about tusing this settings. Any suggestions?
Thanks again for any help.

Hi,
According to your description, for your performance is really slow, firstly, after restarting the IIS, SQL
Server services and Windows SharePoint Services, please check that whether the subsite is very slow.
In addition, you also can use firebug to check issue.
Finally, I have found a thread to be similar to your problem, for more information, please refer to:
