Transfer wss 2.0 sites to wss 3.0
Hello,
We have wss 2.0 and wss 3.0 installed on same server side by side. There are a large number of sites in wss 2.0 that need to be transferred to wss 3.0, including contents, documents, security settings, etc.. What are the best way, or options, to have
these done ? Thanks in advance for any advice!

You could follow the below steps.
Copy the WSS 2.0 content database to the new database which hosts 3.0 Create a new web application in Central administration. Verify the credentials of SetupService account, should be dbowner of the new database that was copied
Run stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://wss3.0/ -databaseserver xxxx -databasename (copied content db)
Review log file 12\Logs\Updgrade.log Review the application event log on the WSS 3.0
Hope this helpsV

Thank you very much!
If I understand correctly, these steps would add an additional content database for wss3 besides the existing wss3 content database, then link up with the newly created 3.0 web app. It's not to merge / transfer wss3 content db into wss3 content db, is that
correct?
And the command stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://wss3.0/ -databaseserver xxxx -databasename (copied content db) will migrate all sites in wss2 into wss3, instead of site by site, is that correct?

The phrase "side-by-side" is used by Microsoft only when this is done in SBS 2003 environment.
Is that what you have or are you using the wrong phrase here for a Windows based "partial installation"?

Hi Jhu60,
Yes, WSS 2.0 database will not merge with WSS 3.0 database. And you can also use Database upgrade option. It will not affect both systems if there
is anything went wrong. Check out this similar thread and also this
blog.

My situation is we have both wss2.0 and 3.0 installed on the same web server and sites for each service co-exist. I am not sure if that fit MS phrase of "side-by-side".
What we need to do is to transfer all 2.0 sites to 3.0, can be all at once or site by site, and eventually retire and remove 2.0 service. And I am trying to find best way or any options to implement it. Would this phrase make any difference for implementing
the goal? Thanks!

The question was is your system running on Windows Server (then it is the result of a partial upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 - where some parts are upgraded and others left at 2.0 level to be upgraded later) or on Small Business Server (then it is the result of
a side-by-side upgrade which is only possible for SBS 2003 as it retains the SBS-only functions that come with the SBS 2003 version of WSS 2.0).
So
- Windows Server
or
- Small Business Server 2003
?
[Note: I'm away for a week, so if the reply says SBS, would some other Moderator please move the thread to the SBS forum (TechNet below the forums headed Windows).]

Thank you for the helpul resources, Emir!
It looks like overall migration. At this point, I am curious if it's possible to migrate individual collaboration site one by one. If this conservative approach doable, that would fit our users' need better.
Thanks again!

It's Windows server 2003, no SBS. If side-by-side only means for SBS, sorry, I must used wrong terms.

Hi Jhu60,
You can take the step follow the following reference to perform a gradual upgrade for WSS. And if you have any question, please feel free to let us know.

Thank you Emir!
In the "Upgrade sites by using Central Administration pages" approach, the first step "In Central Administration, on the
Operations tab, under Upgrade and Migration, click
Site content upgrade status". In my installed wss 3.0 Central Admin, Operations tab, I can't see Upgrade and Migraton section. Does that mean my installation missed some component? If that's the case, do I have to re-install wss 3.0 service?
Or some specific component can be installed separately? Thank you in advance!
